I thought the new USFL was borne from the prior Spring Football League, or was at least initiated by that organization to the point that thy retain ownership over that brand. I night be wrong, though.

Fox Sports eventually bought out the original rights holders to the USFL identities and legacy. That's why there was little commentary about the original league in 2022, but a lot of parallel re-writing in 2023.

The Spring Football League was a league that ran in 2000 and lasted all of 4 games. San Antonio and Houston were namedthe league champs by default, with 2-0 records.

That San Antonio uniform was interesting to say the least.

Not only is UFL a poor name in its own right, but it's a significant step down from one of the existing names, the USFL.  The USFL name has tremendous recognition, and enjoys overwhelmingly positive associations.  To just toss away this brand equity is to create a new problem where one did not previously exist.

Since it's a split of both leagues, I don't see why one league gets preference over the other. As long as the new logo is closer to the USFL design than the XFL design I'll be happy. I also wonder what changes will occur to the USFL uniforms if Under Armour stays as the uniform provider. I figure Memphis will look like Houston, minus the split helmet designs. The Gamblers would probably just lose the grey insert on the jerseys, though I think a new uniform that's closer to the 1984 team is a better move. Birmingham's design is easy to transfer over to the UA templates. I really want UA to lean into branding and fan gear with this league like they didn't do with the XFL. The only way you could get your hands on anything that was actual league gear was to attend a season ticket member event and be lucky enough to win whatever draw was being held. I did buy the Brahmas home jersey, but it was 60% off, so I only paid $76 instead of $190.

If they can get a TV deal in Canada, then it could be:  Liaison of Inter-National Television; League of American Football, or . . .

    LINT LOAF.

Fox and NBC running the league will probably be the best thing for this, as the USFL has gotten big viewing bumps after NASCAR and the Kentucky Derby.

I'm sure Orlando could work if done right, but why should they continue to exist if they averaged 7th of 8 teams at just a shade under 9000 fans a game

Choosing the right stadium would work, and Camping World isn't the right stadium, especially when they put the fans directly in the sunlight. Exploria would be the best option, but if we're looking at a permanent move to mid-March starts, that's not going to happen. I think you also need to have Tampa Bay playing at the same time as well, to get those extra casuals in.

Speaking of Canton, I'm not an Ohioan(?), but what is the better Ohio market for spring football; Canton or Columbus?

Canton has the allure of the original NFL cities and the Hall of Fame, and a better stadium. Columbus has the ability to host football at LDC and HCS, but the Crew would not allow that at LDC. So for the UFL, Canton is the best option going forward. Ohio Stadium just isn't going to happen. With Ohio Stadium, you'd have the same field painting issues you have with Ford Field. But I also believe that the logos and Big Ten logos are stitched in still, so that's even more of an issue in cold weather when you have to paint over those.

In that case, maybe it was a logistical measure that caused it, like obtaining a venue lease in time for March 2024.

Moving the schedule forward from what it was for the USFL probably plays a role here.

They can't drop a team in Canton and just rebrand as "Ohio" to also represent Cleveland, Columbus and Cincy? It's been done before.

    1992-Ohio-Glory-Media-Guide.jpg

If they were going to stay with USFL branding, they were probably hamstrung with which name to use.  Canton may still be in play this coming year anyways, because Rice Stadium's dates sliding back may cause the school to decide not to let the Gamblers use it.

Around the 30 minute mark they discuss the possibility of Canton still being in play. I would just call the team the Aviators or Linemen form TSL and go with that. Calling them the Gamblers for a year, then moving the team to Houston would also be a possibility, but are they going to be called Canton, or do you call them Houston expecting that they'll be leaving after a season?

The Canton operation of the USFL had been doing marketing in the Cleveland area within the last month or so.  'Pop up tents' with a spin the wheel for prizes at local shopping areas promoting tickets for the USFL in Canton.

    I guess, all for not.

Way to stick it to the 50 fans who actually came out to watch last season!

Canton came out for Pittsburgh games, but not for Generals games. That seems like that was the case with each hub. The USFL just using a generic. "Canton" and not choosing which team would actually fill the role makes it difficult for fans to bite on tickets.

Ya know, saving half the teams from each league isn’t a bad thing. Especially if the remaining teams are being “shelved” for 2025.

16 teams in a complete league reboot is a tall task.

If they were all averaging around 15,000-20,000 it's workable, but it really sucks Seattle is on ice for the moment.

Who owns the AAF's IP? It would be nice if a purchase of the name "Orlando Apollos" could have been arranged. (Even if not for use right now, but maybe for a year or two down the line, if things go well.)

I think whomever bought the rights to the AAF app has the names as well.

The supposed new league name is UFL (United Football League). If that’s the case, is this legally possible? The old UFL lasted from 09-12.

XFL apparently bought the rights to the name right before, or right after merger talks were publically announced.

I think Canton got cut because nobody could decide who among the Maulers, Generals or Stars would be Canton.

Too bad. I think the lack of time probably played a role here as well.

I don't watch too much college football during its regular season, but with ESPN's current scoreboard, how many yards minimum does a rushing TD need to be for a "TO THE HOUSE" flash instead of simply "TOUCHDOWN"?

I think it just has to be between 30 to  50 yards. If they do something spectacular inside that range they can also qualify.

UNC-NC State needs to learn from UCLA-USC and BYU-Utah and become an annual color vs color matchup. Same with Florida-Georgia and Georgia-Ga. Tech.

Since Georgia Tech's primary home uniform is white, I don't see a reason for them to wear navy or gold.

    1 hour ago, Mingjai said:

You’re right. I’d imagine UCLA-USC would fit well in the B1G’s rivalry week lineup during the USC at Notre Dame years. I image the B1G will move some rivalry week games to Friday night to keep their broadcast partners happy.

I guess the other option for the B1G is to market a late October/early November mini-rivalry week for the B1G teams with secondary rivals and always have UCLA-USC there along with Michigan-Michigan State and Minnesota-Iowa.

I think for USC this is what they would be happy with since they rotate the last game of the year between UCLA and Notre Dame.

Ok, I need somebody to explain to me what going on here.

I can't figure out what's worse: the fact that UK has chrome helmets at all, or the style of #90s helmet. Thing looks like a chromed out Green Ranger helmet...

I wouldn't mind the chrome helmet as much if they used blue decals instead of white. Personally, I don't like it at all, but at least make it so we can tell what your logo is.

How young and hungry or old and desperate do you have to be to take the Panthers job this offseason? Your #1OA quarterback you traded up for is a boy among men, the rest of your roster around him sucks ass, and you have no first-round pick this year to show for it because you also traded that (and your #1 WR) to the Bears, who are somehow possibly an even dumber franchise than yours. This is a job for the guy who gets coffee for the guy who gets coffee for Sean McVay, or, like, Ken Whisenhunt.

I bet Harbaugh picks up that phone if he gets the call, seeing as he called the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry manufactured today.

This photo further emphasizes the conversation to be desperately had about the Kansas City Football Team.

Several people said it was half black/half red. Still cringy as hell to dress your kid up like that.

Why can't MLS get more well known companies for sponsorships? I understand it for less popular teams in smaller markets but LAFC, Galaxy, Seattle, Atlanta, and Miami are premier teams and all have not very well known or just weird sponsors.

Only teams I can think of with well known sponsors are:

Charlotte - Ally (at least for me)

    Austin - Yeti

Toronto - BMO (big in Canada I guess)

    Minnesota - Target

NYC teams - Kind of? But they are owned by them so not as cool

Columbus has Nationwide as the main shirt sponsor. I'll still take this over the original MLS days when the league assigned the brands to each team.

Smaller "challenger" brands are more likely to sponsor shirts/patches than Apple, Google, etc.

And this is why the Crew's sleeve sponsor is Tipico Sportsbook.

I know too many Columbus Crew fans. This game will either be very fun or one of the worst sports losses ever. I'm truly nonplussed at how invested I am in an MLS game. This is exactly how I felt when the Bengals were in the AFC Championship the last two years.

I'm looking forward to this game. I'm also glad that I'm in Texas and not Ohio, because if the Crew loses I won't see all the "Fire the whole staff and ship Player # to Siberia" like I saw after the Ohio State game last week. We've got a good team this year, but just making it to the Conference final was considered pretty big before the season started.

I really loved how last night’s Civil War looked. I’ve always thought these games look best under the lights, especially when the game showcases as much color as last night’s did. I thought the Ducks’ white pants and socks really helped the overall contrast and helped to alleviate the highlighter-esque effect. Had the Beavs worn their black helmets and/or pants, I think this would’ve been my favorite color on color Civil War matchup yet.

I see LSU is in “icy” all-white from head to toe against A&M. Second game in a row wearing white helmets and pants for them (wore purple jerseys against GA State).

I’m not at all an LSU fan, but sorry, they should never wear anything other than gold helmets and pants.  It just doesn’t look like LSU and the alternate white features aren’t better than the gold.

I like the idea of LSU trying out new uniform combos. It's not the norm for them, but it's a good look all the same.

Louisville lost to Pitt and Kentucky. Winning the ACC won't change anything. They're out. If Washington loses to Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship, they're still ahead of Ohio State, IMO. One could argue the same for 2-loss Alabama and Texas, although that's far from a slam dunk.

My brain skipped over that first Louisville loss, but committee practice in the past has not put a 2 loss team in. Penn State was the best 2 loss team not put in. I can't see a two loss Alabama ahead of the Buckeyes, who would have been expected to win the Big Ten if they beat Michigan. Bama was lucky to survive Auburn who decided to rush two and spy a LB instead of sending him too. Texas would drop too, because of Oklahoma State's position in the rankings but I'm expecting a bump for them this week as well.

  18. 5 hours ago, oldschoolvikings said:

So I suppose it's going to annoy the hell out of everyone if a bunch of chaos happens again, and Ohio State sneaks back in?

(Washington gives Oregon a 2nd loss, Georgia gives Alabama a second loss, two loss Oklahoma beats Texas again,  and Florida State loses... who else could it be?)

Ohio State isn't getting back in because the weird amount of things that would have to happen, possibly even including Iowa beating Michigan in the Big Ten Championship, just aren't going to happen. Georgia winning would help, but I think Alabama will knock them off. Just a feeling, but I hope that's not the case. Florida State is unlikely to lose to Louisville, but if they do Louisville has a championship that should weigh more over Ohio State.

Cheaters never win! Three in a row for Michigan, this might be lights out for Ryan Day.

This idiots will want Meyer back or Hartline to take over, then complain if they lose again next year. Day has lost 7 games, and he's likely getting 2 of those back if any actual punishment comes to Michigan. They made due with the backup to the backup, Ewers would have been the starter this year, and still won 11 games. This is the classic example of fans who've had it too good.

I also wonder how crazy fans will be if both teams know they're in the Big Ten championship, since divisions go away next year. I don't think it's happening, but it's a possibility now.
