NJTank
I saw this in a story on ESPN.comDespite his bleak prediction, Gretzky again reiterated that it's not his place to take an active role in helping bring the camps together."It's not like 700 players and 30 owners go into a room and negotiate a contract. It doesn't work like that. I'm not part of that," Gretzky said.http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/story?id=1957666How friggen gutless is that what a coward I guess he need McSorley to do his fights for him and in thsi case he cant.Wayne Gretzky is the greatest player who ever lived he is now and owner, he had creditabillity in both camps he could play a huge roll in getting an agreement but no he dont want to get involved. Want to know why there will be no hockey thats why becuase the hockey people dont do any thing to stick uo for their sport. When I thought there be a deal I figured Wayne and Mario would play a key roll in a setllement but Wayne dose not thinks its place what a joke what a total joke. Thats why we may never see the NHL as we knew and love it again. www.sportsecyclopedia.com For the best in sports history go to the Sports E-Cyclopedia at http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com
Phil
I don't blame him... it isn't his place. It's true he has credibility on both sides, but the flip side of that is that he has friends on both sides, and why would he want to jeopardize the good standing of his friendships over a dispute that's already gotten ugly and messy.Pack it in for the long haul boys, this one isn't going to end real soon. The sooner we realize this, the better off we'll be.
thejroll
Its not like its his and only his responsibility to get the two sides to see eye to eye. There's a leagues full of owners and players who dont really seam to care if they lose the season. Both sides are should be equal in recieving blame. CaolinaJoe
What about Mario? He IS a player AND owner. Why doesn't he try and do something? You can't come down on Gretzky without dogging out Lemieux also. "It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of thepress. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom ofspeech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given usthe freedom to demonstrate. And it is the soldier who salutes theflag, serves beneath the flag, whose coffin is draped by the flag, andwho allows the protester to burn the flag."Marine Chaplain Dennis Edward O' Brien
Puckguy14
If anything Mario has to step back due to conflict of interest. For Wayne, he is an owner but has ties to the NHLPA. More than anything he can be a link to try and figure out what to do. It's a double whammy because Glendale Arena is to hold the next NHL ASG in 2006. For the stuggling Coyotes, they need the revenue for that more than anything. Wayne, I doubt you'll see this, but if you do, you have the ability to talk to Bettman and Goodenow on good terms to work this out. Talk to them as you push them into an empty hotel room with everything taken out. When you leave, board up the windows, bolt the doors and force these two guys... the two guys who DON'T want a season to get a deal done so we can have a season and in the end, the greatest hockey player saved hockey from extinction and potential "Cult Sport" status. 2004 San Jose Sharks 7th Man Fan of the Year San Jose Gold Miners - 4x Lombardi Cup Champions

NJTank
Id like to see Mario step in as a mediator too, but he does have that conflict which is bad, and puts him ina compromising position he would not be in if he just retired. www.sportsecyclopedia.com For the best in sports history go to the Sports E-Cyclopedia at http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com

tmorss9
That was in Salt Lake City, and it was all true, every word of it. Plus he may have done that to take some of the heat off his team. To me it was like watching Phil Esopsitos rant in 1972. As far as him jumping in on the negotiations, yes, if he and Mario would help, it may go a little easier, but it may not. They are only two people when all is said and done, regardless of who they are. Plus I read (on foxsports.com i think) that the majority partner in the Coyotes may be looking to sell, so Gretzky may not be an owner much longer. "Hats for bats. Keep bats warm.
