BB61
I don't know about the Nets, but the Jets were named because of its proximity to JFK airport.EDIT: They played at Shea Stadium originally, that's what I meant.
Krona
im sure that was a deciding factor, but i doubt the rhyme is coincidence

FiddySicks
and where have you seen a Ram in LA? accually, most team names i can think of, are pretty easy to determine. ones ive always wondered about is the dodgers, i think it had something to do withthe brooklyn trolley dodgers or something, but im not sure. and dose anyone know what the origin of the Packers is? howabout the panthers and jaguars? and finally the last two before i get annoying, what exactly is a flyer? and how many indians have you seen in Cleveland? sorry this is kind of a hot topic with me, im very curiousaccually looking at the four major sports, most team names make some sort of sense, but the ones listed at the top have always had me curious On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.) CaolinaJoe
Packers comes from the meat packers of the area. "It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of thepress. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom ofspeech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given usthe freedom to demonstrate. And it is the soldier who salutes theflag, serves beneath the flag, whose coffin is draped by the flag, andwho allows the protester to burn the flag."Marine Chaplain Dennis Edward O' Brien
KennyRock
I think the NY/NJ rhyming is something largely started by fans. Mets is short for "Metropolitans", referring to the New York City metropolitan area in which they play. The Jets' reason has already been named, and the Nets has the obvious link to basketball. Also, I'm almost positve that the Nets existed in the ABA before the Mets were even created. New York Jets |3-3| First, AFC EastNew York Mets |74-88| Fourth, NL EastNew York Islanders|34-37-11| Fifth, Atlantic DivisionNew Orleans Hornets |21-45| Third, Southwest Division

FiddySicks
some team names that i trhought were really fitting were the Houston Astros(i think they could keep the columbia patch for good, it honors the fallen astronauts and ties in with the uni perfectly), the Rockies (Duhhh), the Padres (dont be fooled i still hate all of the Giants division rivals), the Raiders (just weorks anywhere), Cardinals (there are a boatload of those birds in missou), and, yes the bucs( ) On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.) Josh the Reds are named because they were the Red Stockings, they shortened it to the Reds years later. Tigers were named because of there socks. They used to be the Detroit Wolverines in the National League. Played in a few Circuits before they eventually played for the American League. The name Tigers come from the Black and Orange "Stockings" they used to wear. Nickname got around and they stuck with the Tigers and they've been the Tigers to this day.
