This morning on SportsTalk 980 (in DC) they were having a b!tch session about uniforms, started by the atrocious white-on-white Skins unis so detested in this area. Anyway, they mentioned that the latest Rockets uniforms (which aren't too popular, I've heard) are modelled on the uniforms of the national basketball team from China because of Yao Ming...and that this was done to sell more Rockets jerseys in China!!

Anyone have any pics of the China uniform? If this is true, I would say it's pretty ridiculous...but not surprising in this day and age!

By the way, most of the callers wanted the Skins to use the spear-helmet uni from 2002 full-time or go back to the George Allen unis...NOBODY likes the all-whites.

Although the Rockets may not be in top 10, McGrady is always in the Top 10. The most popular jerseys are usually directly related to the stars that play on that team. One of the original reasons for the switch back to red does indeed have to do with the China connection. Funny thing is, Yao isn't even the biggest seller in China right now. T-Mac and Iverson are.

The Rockets' current set is actually pretty well-liked here in Houston. It was a major upgrade over the pinstriped pajamas that they wore after the unneeded switch from the championship mustard&ketchup gear.

The Chinese uni's are red & yellow. The Rockets are red & silver. That's pretty much as similar as it gets. They really don't look anything alike.

The Rockets should be wearing red and yellow again. Just sub out the silver for yellow and use Houston on red, and hey. Does Houston really care about the Rockets that much, anyway? Houston doesn't seem like a great sports town to me.

From what I heard it's a bandwagon town.

As for the Rockets unis, the only similarity, as Bouj pointed out, is the primary colour being red. In fact the old Rockets unis looked more like the Chinese nation team unis then the current Rockets threads.

I think the switch back to red had more to do with the fans wanting a return to red then trying to market to fans in China.

Here's a pic of China's jersey. Like it's been said, it's red, but that's the only similarity. Plus it has those ugly Nike shoulder stripes, although you can't really see them here.

The design was in the works BEFORE the Rockets drafted Yao Ming, so it's probably just a coincidence that it has an Asian feel...
