Hockey Night In Liberia

Great article.

I like the way the Liberian men wear these jerseys in the summer as a 3/4-cut baseball shirt. Here is a site by famous statistician Hans Rosling about poverty: he gives great TED lectures about the comparisons between the overall wealth of a nation and the national health. Look him up on youtube:

The flag of Liberia is very similar to America's, its citizens have vaguely English/American sounding names, and the name of the capital city is Monrovia. I remember hearing that Haiti was the only country created by freed slaves, but I think Liberia was created by freed slaves who lived in present-day America.

In one of Hans Rosling's speeches, and the information is available on gapminder.org, he mentions that the placement of America in 1800 on the cross-hairs of the graph which represents the connection between GDP and average life expectancy, America of 1800 and Swaziland of 2007 are almost in identical positions...

So, the best real-life representation of America during the time of the founding fathers is actually in present-day Sub-Saharan Africa. Glen Beck should move there (I just can't help myself. Do not graveyard this article for that!).

What about the fact that these efforts to find cheap clothing for the citizens who live on under $1/day ruins the textiles industry in these nations?

Are these industries run by oppressive multi-national corporations in sweatshop conditions? If so, um...Bully for this program(?)
