39Thirty vs. 59Fifty

I've started getting interested in collecting MLB authentic caps. I have a very small collection now, but it's growing. I've been mostly buying the 59Fifty models, as they are the on-field authentic, but also because they seem to be available in much larger quantities than the 39Thirty batting practice authentic.

And that's my question: I've heard that unlike the 59Fifty, the 39Thirty models are constantly outdated, because teams are changing the BP cap looks every 2-3 years. Is this true? Are they harder to find in stores simply because they are less popular? I've not yet been able to try one on because I can't find them in any stores, but I do think they look pretty cool. Do they feel a lot different from the 59Fifty? They seem to have the same build quality but are shaped a little differently and have a stretch fit.

It's not necessarily that teams are changing BP caps every 2-3 years; it's more that New Era has been changing the template. Take a look at the Orioles page on the mothership, for example, and scroll down to the batting practice jerseys section. You can see how it has gone from a secondary team color sandwiched in the bill, to piping over the ear that filled in, to piping over the ear that's not filled in, to piping that runs from the top button down to the bill.

I would say, yes, they probably are harder to find in stores because people either care too much ? they fervently want to the authentic, on-field, in-game product ? or they care too little and would take a cheaper, generic flexfit hat.

They do feel a fair bit different from 59Fiftys, mostly because of the stretch fit ? although I am a size 8 and the L/XL 39Thirtys fit just fine so long as my hair is reasonably short ? and they definitely have a lower crown/profile than the 59Fiftys.

In my opinion, it is actual, I will take part in discussion.

This may be the single greatest spambot post ever.

Anyway, I vastly prefer 59Fiftys. But that's just me.

Yeah, 59Fiftys are FAR more popular than the new BP caps, mainly because the new BP caps have an obnoxiously-curved brim and no longer have the same profile as the 59Fifty. There was nothing wrong with the old mesh 59Fiftys.

I agree with you about the shape, but the quality of the old mesh BP caps was terrible. The material was so flimsy that they completely fell apart pretty quickly. I've had four or five of them and they all ended up tearing.

I've had the same experience with the old 39Thirtys. The thread would start to pull after only a few wears.

Checked my local LIDS again today, I saw they got a few 39Thirty in stock. I ended up getting a Dodgers BP cap. Now that I had a chance to try them on, I like it. They seem a lot more comfortable than the 59Fifty, I guess because they can stretch quite a bit more. I like the material, too, although it looks a little bit cheaper and seems like it is more prone to getting dirty (maybe it just looks that way.)

Overall, I like them. I guess the 59Fifty is a lot more popular, but BP caps are not a bad alternative at all.
