This is one of my favorite logos of all-time. I'm sure I'm prejudiced by the fact that I have so many good memories associated with it. I'd be curious to hear how others (non Reds fans) feel about it.

I always wondered why Mr. Red wore #27 and always assumed it was just random. It turns out, it was not...

One of the most enduring sports logo mysteries involves the Cincinnati Reds’ “Mr. Red” that the club utilized from 1968 until 1992. Mr. Red wore the number 27 throughout these years, a golden era which saw the club win five National League pennants.

Mr. Red was so closely identified with the number that no Reds player was assigned uniform number 27 from 1968 until 1973.

The connection between Mr. Red and uniform number 27 is well known, but has never been explained. The enigma is so deep that no plausible explanation has, to my knowledge, ever even been floated.

Now, 46 years later, the mystery of Mr. Red and uniform number 27 has been solved.

More on Mr. Red from the Todd Radon site...

(Not sure if Todd posts here or not, but that's an awesome site and recommended reading for anyone who posts here. I just discovered it literally a few minutes ago.)

I love the Houston Astros (née Colt .45s) program on that page that makes fun of the Reds for changing their nickname. Pot, meet kettle.
