I LOVE powder blue. It's my favorite color. From as light as North Carolina to as dark as the Panthers, but powder blue wasn't anybody's team color back then. Some time in the 70s gray fabrics started having this blue tint to them (don't think it was on purpose originally) and by the 80s it was full on powder and most teams road jersey color, so basically acted as a gray jersey.

But at the end of the day IDC and am still a sucker for it and buy the merchandise.

That said there is a bit of an over saturation of it. Like I don't think the Rangers need/belong in powder blue uniforms. And I don't need the Braves or Cubs bringing them back unless it's a one time deal.

Wasn't alive back then, so maybe it's just because these teams were successful in the 80s so I'm used to seeing highlights, but when I think "throwback" and "powder blue" I immediately think of the Royals, Cardinals and Phillies. I love it on the Blue Jays too. And am sort of "ahh I'll allow it" with the Twins and to a lesser extent, Brewers. But that's pretty much it. (I'd add the Expos to this list if they still existed.)

*(Not counting the Rays as they came after the fact and made it an actual team color).

That right there is some revisionist history.

I found an early 1980s Green Bay Packers #83 jersey with LATTA on the back and an uncrested New Jersey Devils 1980s-era Christmas colors jersey for $50 altogether.

Hmm - can't find anyone with that name in the all-time roster (Latta). Fan jersey, I'm guessing?

John Thomson wore it from 79-81, and John Jefferson from 81-84

Are you watching a lot of games from the sky? Just hovering there above the players, maybe attached to one of those camera rigs?

Literally nobody, in today's high-definition world, needs to reference tiny shoulder numbers to identify a player.  Broadcasters aren't suddenly scrambling for help to identify players on the Chargers because the team decided not to shoehorn a needless element onto the shoulders.

And listen, could they fit on some uniforms? Sure, in the tiniest form, perhaps. You could also probably rest a bowl of soup on their shoulders, or a small dog, but you don't because doing so wouldn't make any sense. Just like forcing TV numbers on there.

Literally me, sitting in Row 53 at Lambeau Field, uses TV numbers to help ID players on the field during a game.

Your statement is factually incorrect in that case, because someone is still getting use of them. I wholeheartedly agree that the shrinking of them should relegate them to the past, but where they are still legible, they are useful.

Outcome of the game gon' be what it is...I'm talking about two of the absolute best (if not THE best) tailgate fanbases and atmospheres chopping it up...I've never actually been TO the Bills stadium, but I've been close. One of these days I'll catch a tailgate and a game there...it's on my list. (So too is Lambeau on game day.)

Yeah. We will have a great tailgate. We've got brats, burgers and brisket. I'm on the grill. It will be fun.

Just joking regarding the outcome of the game doing anything for my fun. While it IS fun to win, the whole weekend is the real deal.

    • 3W No idea why teams opt for navy when they play a navy team. This would be a great looking matchup with the Chargers in their primaries. And I agree with the sentiment that this look is unnecessary but could be salvaged by a navy helmet to at least match its inspiration.

I thought the inspiration was from the early 60s, making this helmet correct.  Am I remembering wrong?

A pity there's not a good alternative.  South Carolina has to share "Carolina" with UNC, and "USC" with the Trojans.  Compare this to the three notable UWs.  Wyoming is Wyo for short, Washington is often called U-Dub.  As a shorthand, we stick with Wiscy or UW for Wisconsin, or Madison if we're feeling academic, never U-Dub.

Man - anyone who calls it Wiscy gets a side eye from anyone I know. That's like shorthand for 'tell me you aren't from here without telling me you aren't from here'.

Oddly, U-Dub-Dub is a frequent term for UW Whitewater, but I agree that U-Dub isn't used for Wisconsin

    UT?

    IU?

I was hoping to see a good uniform matchup, because I don't expect to enjoy the game in person 🤣

There's gonna be a mudhole stomped on one team, and it won't be the one in monochrome blue.

Tonight...a rare sight: a functional, enjoyable Bears offense; yesterday, the most aggravating, dysfunctional and outright boring game I've ever seen Rodgers play.  '22 season, amirite?

Bears receivers were getting open against a Pats defense the Packers' corps struggled to do the same against...then again, at this rate it doesn't seem like GB's receivers could get open against statues.  Makes me wonder...

If they were open, the pass would be low.

I remember when the rumors first leaked about the Jags helmet from that 2013-17 set. Everyone thought it was gonna be like this San Diego State helmet...

And it actually could've been a a salvageable set if that were the case. Alas, they took it way too far.

I'd argue that it was less about taking it too far than that they didn't execute it well, as @Old School Fool demonstrates above. Not only did it not fade, their marketing speak explaining it was bassackwards (it was showing the jaguar hunting from the shadows, which should have resulted in the black part of the helmet being at the back, not at the front).

I would argue that, when trying to build a brand, being unique and instantly recognizable is very important. Those aren't the only things needed to look good, but they do contribute to that.

Absolutely.  Rather than trying a unique helmet treatment. I would suggest trying to work with the color scheme. Teal, black and gold is already a unique color scheme. That uniform was trying to be unique for the sake of being unique. It could have relied on its color and been a good uniform.

I just appreciated how it was something different & unique. Like it or not, you can't say it wasn't something instantly recognizable

Honestly, I think the current Rams helmets are far worse.

None of those bolded words equate to good, though.

The more I hear about how crappy and egotistical of a person Russell Wilson really is and how horrible he’s been playing this season, maybe there’s a reason why he’s never received any MVP votes

Keep in mind that you only get to vote for one person for the MVP. It isn't a case of voting for your top 3 or 10 like baseball MVP and/or Cy Young. It really isn't surprising (and has nothing to do with being a nozzle).
