leopard88
I just noticed last night that -- at least in my opinion -- centerfield at AT&T park bears a pretty strong resemblance to centerfield at the Polo Grounds (see below). The resemblance comes from the straight centerfield wall, the indentation (which is fenced off at AT&T), the structure and the stairs beside the structure. Two questions --Am I the only one who sees a resemblance?Does anyone know if the Giants have ever said that any resemblance is intentional? bosrs1
You're the only one that sees the resemblence. I mean beyond that it's a green batters eye I don't see any design cues that the two structures share. I mean yes the Polo Grounds had stairs next to theirs, but they were field stairs, not part of the bleacher grandstand like they are at Pac Bell. And beyond that they really have nothing else in common.
leopard88
I'll grant you the steps, but I really see some similarity in the site of the building (including its recessed location relative to the outfield fence) and the straight line of the centerfield fence. The lower portion of the Polo Grounds building even appears to be about the same size/width as the AT&T Park building. It may be (quite probably is) purely coincidental. However, I think the similarity goes beyond their both being green batter's eyes. For what it's worth, my son agreed with me . . . but he is 13 and never saw the Polo Grounds until I showed him a picture last night. They all have some form of recession in there usually used for storage relative to the outfield fence (which Polo Grounds actually didn't have since it had no fence). Similarly they're all about the same width due to requirements from the league. I think you're seeing something you'd like to be there but it's really not. The only thing the Polo Grounds and AT&T Park share is an overly short right field line.
FiddySicks
No, I think there's some validity to what he's saying. I remember hearing how certain aspects of AT&T Park were inspired by the Polo Grounds, but I can't remember what exactly it was. Sport
I've never thought about it because other ballparks have had an open storage looking space in that part of their ballpark too (Turner Field and new Comisky off the top of my head), but now that I look at it it does make some sense. Perhaps all those other yards were inspired by the Polo Grounds too.It doesn't not look like the Polo Grounds. I'll give the OP that.
TheOldRoman
All batters' eyes are either greenery-covered hills or big walls set back behind the seating sections. If they wanted to make it like the Polo Grounds, they would have removed the fence in CF and had the field reach all the way back to the batters' eye. bosrs1
Part of it is undoubtedly because they removed a whole concession building that had originally been under the batters eye if I'm not mistaken when they put in their garden this past year. It looked even less like the Polo Grounds in its original configuation.
leopard88
Maybe that's why I didn't see any resemblance before.
