I don't know why, but when it comes to memorializing a sports figure, whether it be for a single team or league-wide, my favorite approach is using that person's signature as the memorial. To me, it's a heartwarming reminder of that person who is being remembered. It's quite a nice touch, IMO. I wish more teams took this approach. chrispw12
Another would be the Celtics putting the signature of Red Aeurbach after his death.

Only on the court. They used a shamrock with RED on it on the jerseys.

johnnysama
-and- Sorry to bring this back up, but the Twins also went this route twice, honoring the Pohlads (first Carl's wife, Eloise in 2003, then Carl himself six years later). johnnysama
- Again, sorry to bring up an almost year old thread, but a more recent example is this Flyers memorial patch of founding owner Ed Snider. Beautiful.
BBTV
Numbers should only be used if retired, otherwise 1) it's an ambiguous memorial and could even be worn by the active player with that number, and 2) it reduces that human being to simply an "employee" and just another number. The sig ones are nice, as is the Musial one. At least if the number is retired and you just go with that, it should be pretty clear to all of the teams' fans who it's for.
