As for name rights and logo rights. I have a friend who was involved in the ownership of the Invaders. He has told me on several occasion ( I know that it is 100% or not), that the league logos etc still belong to the owners and officials of the USFL. He also as told me that "legally" the league never officially went out of business, the teams just suspended operations.

Images of the league appear in ads (on TV screens in print ads) and etc and owners try to claim royalities.

We all know what happened with the USFL's lawsuit against NFL. What if the USFL won with a huge award instead of a dollar? What could have happened? Perhaps force the NFL to settle with the USFL and merge?

This is the "what if" version (Hey, I'm bored at work).

1986 is the year both leagues hammer out the details. The merger is completed in 1987. It's a 40 teams league.

AFC EAST

Miami Dolphins

New York Jets

New England Patriots

Buffalo Bills

BALTIMORE STARS (Preserve the AFC East rivalry)

AFC SOUTH

Houston Oilers

JACKSONVILLE BULLS

MEMPHIS SHOWBOATS

The Michigan Panthers had the best unis, that Plum and champagne silver combo just popped right out, who would've thought that color combo would look so cool together. I really like how the silver changed depending how you looked at it, or how certain lighting hit it, at times it looked gold and others silver.

LA with the navy/silver combo looked sharp too. I also like the Pittsburgh Maulers, Jacksonville Bulls colors and the aforementioned Wranglers unis with their use of copper.
