Report: Palmeiro tested positive for stanozolol
August 2, 2005

NEW YORK (AP) -- Rafael Palmeiro's positive steroid test was for stanozolol, a powerful anabolic steroid that is not available in dietary supplements, according to a newspaper report.

The New York Times, citing a person in baseball with direct knowledge of the sport's drug-testing program, reported on its Web site Tuesday that Palmeiro tested positive for the drug known by the brand name Winstrol, most notably linked to the Olympic sprinter Ben Johnson of Canada.

(...)

Raffy said that maybe the drug was hidden in usual dietary supplements... oh oh.

Next time I'll check if my Wrigley chewing gums hasn't any stanozolol.

So does this mean stanozolol is the secret ingredient in Viagra?

Seriously, this type of 'roid isn't one that's gonna accidently be put into a nutritional supplement...it's time to face the facts...Raffy was juicing and juicing in a big way.

Michael Kay on his regular radio show on ESPN 1050 in New York had a classic comment about Raffy's rather disingenuous claim that he unintentionally juiced up...

"Unintentionally? Did he trip and fall on the needle?"

The thing that REALLY gets me is that this test came up as a positive back in MAY...but thanks to this board thing they have for suspensions (4 member panel, 2 docs, 1 guy from MLB, and 1 from the MLBPA), it went through the appeal process while if it were a Juan Rincon, Alex Sanchez, or Ryan Franklin, BOOM...they got hit immediately.

Granted on that 4 member board, only 1 person has to raise a concern about it being a false positive for it to be appealed...

Somewhere Jose Canseco is feeling just a little more vindicated...

Oh who am I kidding? He's probably giggling like Sam Kinison on nitrous oxide!

That was my initial reaction to hearing this too...

Canseco's probably walking around with a plop-eating grin on his face right about now.

Can someone find the thread where I defended Jose when everyone was calling him a liar? :P

Palmeiro's positive test came after his appearance before Congress but before he recorded his 3,000th hit last month. That means he reached the milestone after he knew about the positive result, the source told the AP.

"He was pretty adamant about the point he didn't do anything. He also remarked he didn't have a lot of time to enjoy his 3,000th hit," Davis said.

............................

So wait, he tested positive for steroids, but they waited until he hit his 3,000 hit milestone before punishing him? Why? For what purpose? Even if by some chance he never touched steroids until after he testified before Congress (which I don't beleive anyway) it would mean everything he did after the positive was illegal anyway.

People could argue that players and their records cannot be thrown out because you cannot pinpoint when they might have been on steroids. Well, in this case I would say we have at least one starting point for Palmeiro so I'd forfeit any stats he aquirred after the positve result. If it were really fair, not only would one eliminate all his stats after his known positive, but that might also result in many forfieted win by Baltimore. Obviously that isn't going to happen, but that kind of result would make punishment for steroids far more encompassing.

Also...I have heard some sportswriters theorize that Palmeiro is actually being thrown under the bus by the powers that be at MLB. They obviously wish to keep drug testing in-house and if they sacrifice a few aging super-stars, it might be enough to show they have been doing enough to continue to do so.

Personally I don't think it's in MLB's best interest to do so, so far his testimony, coupled with his excuses and delays of punishement after getting the result, not to mention the kind of steroid involved is not looking good for baseball. I don't think they are doing enough, I think the punishments for positives are not stiff enough, and I think there are other players out there who have already tested positive- more stars.

We all have our little faults. Mine's in California.

Good points!

So he didn't have time to enjoy his 3000 hit? Maybe he should have been suspended for life when he tested and then never would have gotten to 500 HR and 3000 hits

The timing of the announcement is very suspicious to me. I am sure baseball is still sitting on a volcano and bud and company don't know how to deal with this..

Maybe that is why Bonds isn't playing?

Funny thing is that there are alots of tennists that take drugs... but the ATP didn't say anyword because they came from strong, rich national federations.

BTW, I think the Cañas' suspension is correct.
