"Color" Commentators

I heard something funny on the radio on Saturday that I knew you all would appreciate it.

As I was driving home from work, I was listening to the Tourney on Westwood One (Radio). As most commentators do on the radio (even TV), they tell you/describe what uniforms each team was wearing.

As Washington-Illinois was preapring to tip, the "color" commentator stated that Illinois was "wearing their Orange uniforms w/ black and white trim" and Washington was in their "blue away uniforms with gold and white trim".

Now I dont' know about anybody else, but shouldn't a "color" commentator at least know what the color sets are for the teams, even if he is by chance...color-blind?

I thought it was interesting. Either way, the Illini blew the game...Go UConn!

Ehhh. Its Westwood One, they're terrible. We used to broadcast Westwood One games but eventually dumped them because of their dry, generic, and often misinformed crappiness. Not that suprising.

i remember when i played basketball in high school, our colors where maroon and gold, everytime we wore maroon, the refs always called us red.

Refs do that to make foul and violation reporting easy to understand. Yellow teams are called gold and orange teams are called red, for example. One syllable colors are used. However, that still doesn't explain why the radio commentators couldn't identify the colors navy and purple.

Exactly!

Purple is blue

Yellow is gold

Maroon is red

Orange is red

All colors are one syllable to us officials.

Speaking as a sports logo obssessive who also happens to be color blind, I synpathize with the color commentator. He's sees what he sees....Of course, I suppose he could have checked the press guide if he had some doubt. Or asked somebody.
