Derrek Lee agrees to new five-year, $65M deal

Lee was due to make $9.42 million in the final season of his $22.5 million, three-year deal, but the new contract replaces those terms, as it is effective this season, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney reported. Lee's new contract, which calls for a $13 million annual salary from 2006-10, contains a complete no-trade clause, Olney reported.

This is tremendous news if you're a Cubs fans, especially thinking that the Cubs were going to blow it and let this guy get away in the off season as previously reported. Lee is one of the premier players in MLB and it's nice to see that the Cubbies will be building around this guy.

I think they probably overpaid a little bit for him all because of one really good year, but someone would have given him at least that much on the free agent market anyways. And the Cubs really had to resign him. Losing him would have been a big blow to them.

We'll just see if he continues to hit like last year or not.

Hmmm. So Lee is now guarenteed two things. A HUGE end of the year paycheck and no rings for at least the next four years. Yeah, id take that deal.

Overpaid, huh...

Paul Konerko - 5 years, $60 mil.

2003 .234, 18 HR, 65 RBI

2004 .277, 41 HR, 117 RBI

2005 .283, 40 HR, 100 RBI

Derrek Lee - 5 years, $65 mil.

2003 .271, 31 HR, 92 RBI

2004 .278, 32 HR, 98 RBI

2005 .335, 46 HR, 107 RBI

Seems to me, all he had to do was slightly improve on his 2004 numbers last year to get the $60 mil... If the Cubs overpaid, it's somewhere in that extra $5 mil. :P

But you're right, especially with another year anywhere close to his 2005 numbers, and he'd have gotten a monster free agent deal...

Well, I didn't say the ChiSox didn't overpay Konerko. But yeah, that's a good comparison. I suspect Lee will fall back to about .310 and 40 HRs. The RBIs are all relative on the rest of the Cubs. So far there offense looks like Lee could be about 115 this year.

So yeah, Konerko money for sure. And as we already agree on...in terms of what his market value would have been, the Cubs probably got a deal. I just think the market inflates players values WAY too much, but teams are willing to spend that much.

Its pretty much what was expected. He's always been a very nice player, and last year just sent him up to the marquee players level. So far, he's continuing on that pace and there isn't much reason to think he'll slip too badly. He had an incredible year last year and it will be hard to duplicate. But if he hits even slightly below those numbers, the cubs are getting a bargin in reality.

I prefer beating a team at full strength, and I feel bad for D. Lee as he's a good guy, but I'm not gonna feel bad for the Cubs.

The Cards had Rolen's shoulder hurt on a similar play but reversed last year and lost Rolen for most of the year (and the games Rolen played in, he wasn't himself). And Rolen wasn't the only injury...not by a long shot. The Cardinals rarely had a lineup that was the same as the lineup the day before. The Cardinals still went out and won 100 games.

It sucks for the Cubs, but it shouldn't be viewed as an excuse.
