Old fashioned team names they'd never pick today

If we wanted to expand this to the college ranks, you could include the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns, UND Fighting Sioux and maybe even the Ole Miss Rebels for racial connotations, as well as the Tulane Green Wave for potential references to storm surges from hurricanes.

Coach Russ Faulkenberry unofficially changed the name from Bulldogs to Ragin' Cajuns in 1963 for the football team, and the student body overwhelmingly chose it in a "change the school mascot!" contest a decade later. This was when the school was 90%+ local in terms of enrollment.

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

Well, if it wasn't under tradition, I know there's a lot of schools in the South that are still under Rebels. My own High School went by the nickname Confederates. Let's see what else, Well yeah Maple Leafs isn't really intimidating IMO. The Knicks is one I see that wouldn't have stuck, but one guy did mention the Houston Colt 45's as well.

funny you mention Rebels, one of the high schools here uses that name. same colors as UNLV, to be exact. I recall looking at a picture of one of their baseball players from the 60s, and on his right sleeve was a confederate-like flag patch (as in the cross wasn't outlined in white, and instead of stars on the cross, there was instead a large star over the middle). ironically, they're located on the north side of town.

I still can't believe they went with "Washington Nationals".

"Nationals"?

I don't care if that's a historical name used in the past, it just bad.

What's it really mean anyway? "Where the guys who live in the nation that we play in"?

There must have been something better that would have at least lent itself to a logo of some sort, rather than just a word mark on an initial.
