From the Syracuse Post-Standard:

The State University College of Environmental Science and Forestry on Friday unveiled a mascot, Oakie, and a name for the college?s new sports teams, Mighty Oaks.

The team name was chosen by more than 800 students and incoming students through an online poll.

The students favored Mighty Oaks over ESF Rangers, Lumberjacks, Coyotes, Black Bears and Night Owls.

The acorn mascot was created by the ESF student association. ESF has soccer, golf and cross-country teams that have been competing on a club level, but in the fall they will become official teams in the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics. Another ESF team, the Woodsmen, will now compete as the Mighty Oaks when it faces other colleges in timber sports.

Mighty Oaks is a nod to a landmark on the college: the Robin Hood Oak. The tree, between Bray and Walters Hall at the east end of the campus, was the first tree to be listed on the National Register of Historic Trees in the United States.

The tree grew from an acorn, obtained by then-ESF professor Nelson C. Brown, who got the acorn from the famous Major Oak in England?s Sherwood Forest around 1926.

This is the logo on their website, which just appears to be their academic logo with Mighty Oaks slapped onto it:

And the mascot:

I, for one, am very disappointed they didn't go with Stumpies (ESF students are commonly known as Stumpies on the Syracuse campus, which is contiguous to and interwoven with ESF).

Simply put...I love the name but hate everything else.

Why would you call yourself "the Mighty Oaks" while having a logo and mascot that is the complete opposite of 'mighty'. They decided to emphasize the one thing about an oak tree that is as unmighty as you can get....an acorn.

Seriously? an acorn? Something who's only job is to fall from a tree and get eaten by squirrels? Seriously?
