Did the Rockies all purple cap always have a black underbrim?

I've looked through the old topics about the Rockies and their all purple cap and couldn't find the answer. Did the Rockies all purple cap always have a black underbrim?

About a month ago, I bought this cap (I like to collect defunct or rarely worn MLB caps):

As you can see, it's the new Cool base with the black underbrim. And you can notice that the black underbrim overlaps into the front of the bill. I thought that that was just the design of the cap and that the older version of it had to be different.

Since the New Era caps used to feature a gray underbrim before they changed it black around 2007 (if I recall), that must mean that when the Rockies wore the all purple cap, they had to have the gray underbrim.

I looked on eBay and I found this listing that features the all purple cap before New Era went Cool Base. (Notice the sweatwhite band, the New Era sticker and the price tag are all pre-Cool Base).

Oddly, this cap has a black underbrim even though it's from an era with the gray underbrim. And that black overlaps onto the bill.

The only photo evidence I can find of the Rockies ever wearing this cap is from this picture from Opening Day 2004.

It's hard to tell, but it looks like the underbrim isn't gray, but black. And there looks to be the overlap onto the bill like the cap I have and the eBay listing I found. (Unless there's other pictures from that day that proves it differently).

So did the Rockies have this black underbrim, overlapping cap the entire time while the rest of the league was still wearing gray underbrims?

Any info is appreciated. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't seeing things.

Yes, but I am basing this solely on memory. I want to say the Angels were also using -- but maybe not selling -- caps with black underbills pre-Cool Base. But as far as I can remember the Rockies' purple caps were introduced with these oddities and always had them.

Finding other pictures of these caps worn during a game has been the hardest thing. If we can find another one, that might just help me figure out if they were black underbrims

If I recall correctly, in MVP 2005, the caps worn by all the Rockies players for thier player pictures are indeed the purple ones, and the black underbrim is visible. I havent played the game in a while, but I remember that always standing out to me.

When I worked at lids I specifically remember selling Angels, Rockies (Purple Alts), and even a hand full of Mariners wool on field 59Fiftys that had black underbrims.

Were the Mariners caps the teal ones with the navy bill?

Nope, regular all navy caps.

OK. Because I own a teal cap/navy bill Mariners with a black underbrim. Then again, it was a re-release so maybe they changed it since photo evidence says they never had black underbrims.

Yup, they are one of the original teams who used a black underbill- (Angels are one too) while the league used grey.

Black attracted sun and reduced glare.

I have the original one, and it's just like the coolbase, just different materials.

Hope that helps.

The overlap was meant to be an aesthetic decision. No other function.

No, mariners were the 3rd and last team to go to black fulltime underneath, and then the next year the rest of the league followed.

Grey was deadstock waiting to be sold, black was the new stuff slowly taking it's stock place.

I recall hearing/reading at the time of the change for the Mariners that the move to black was then-GM Bill Bavasi's doing. The Angels had switched to black underbrims during his tenure there, as well. However, I don't know whether or not that has any truth to it.

For what it's worth, the original teal-crowned M's caps had a gray underbrim. There are currently repros that feature a black underbill, raised MLB logo, and a New Era logo on the side, and ones that feature a gray underbill, flat MLB logo, and no NE logo. I've seen some versions of the latter that include navy stitching around the "vents" on the crown.
