To further add to the realism of this project, the IHL played outdoor games similar to the Winter Classic. The first few years (09, 10, 11) were all football themed with the teams wearing uniforms based on their local NFL teams.

These are the games:

2008-09 Kansas City Blades @ San Diego Gulls, Qualcomm Stadium

2009-10 Cleveland Lumberjacks @ Cincinnati Cyclones, Paul Brown Stadium

2010-11 Detroit Vipers @ Indianapolis Ice, Lucas Oil Stadium

2011-12 Fort Wayne Komets @ Atlanta Knights, Georgia Dome

2012-13 Las Vegas Thunder @ Kalamazoo Wings, Waldo Stadium

How can you have an outdoor game in the Georgia Dome? It's not retractable....

It is what it is.

Oh snap, I just thought about that! I'll fix that up.

Another question: A hockey game outdoors in Sunny San Diego. Cincinnati could work but you could have 20 degree weather one day in ohio and the next it'll be 70.

Mr. Nascar,

If the IHL used common sense, it would still be in existence today. Scheduling a game in San Diego would definitely be an IHL kind of idea, although the NHL held one in Las Vegas in 1991 (LA Kings vs. New York Rangers), and it was moderately successful.

The previously mentioned outdoor games are now known as the Gridiron Classic since they are all in Football Markets. 09, 10, 11 and 12 are in NFL stadiums, and 13 and 14 are both in FBS college stadiums. Also, here's the updated schedule.

2008-09 Phoenix @ San Diego, Qualcomm Stadium

2009-10 Cleveland @ Cincinnati, Paul Brown Stadium

2010-11 Detroit @ Indianapolis, Lucas Oil Stadium

2011-12 Fort Wayne @ Kansas City, Arrowhead Stadium

2012-13 Las Vegas @ Kalamazoo, Waldo Stadium

2013-14 Flint @ Detroit, Big House

I'm almost done with the Indianapolis Ice, so as a bit of a preview, here are the jerseys for the 2011 Gridiron Classic between the Indianapolis Ice and Detroit Vipers.

Ok, the upload finished quicker than I thought, so here are the Indianapolis Ice. They spent their time in the IHL as the Chicago Blackhawks' farm team. I continued that through this project.

The team took to the ice wearing these uniforms for the 1988-89 season. They were obviously based on the L.A. Kings, even though they were affiliated with Chicago.

1989-90_zps5f0ba62f.png

For the 1992-93 season, the Ice changed their numbers a little.

1992-93_zpsa298f798.png

For the 1994-95 season, the Ice added purple to their color scheme and created a new stereotypical 90's logo. Again, they based the jersey design on a team they had no ties to: the Flyers.

When the Ice returned for the 1996-97 season, they had a new logo and third jersey. They would stick with this look for the next 8 seasons.

For the 2004-05 season, the Ice tried a very traditional look, dropping purple from their color scheme. The jerseys were based on the Blackhawks uniforms. Fans complained that the look was too simple and looked too collegiate.

The next season, the Ice added a third jersey based on the Blackhawks uniforms from their inaugural season.

When the IHL converted to the Reebok system, purple was reintroduced into Indy's color scheme. This Yeti logo (based on this one from War-N-Design) was also introduced. The jerseys directly copied the Blackhawks uniforms, with purple replacing red.

When the Blackhawks unveiled their new black third jerseys for the 2008-09 season, the Ice followed suit. They continue to use this look today.

For the 2010-11 season, the Ice added this third jersey based on the Indianapolis Colts for the Gridiron Classic in Indianapolis.

c/c?

Stay tuned, the Cincinnati Cyclones are up next!

Loving the series so far. Not to nitpick but wouldn't Memorial Stadium in Bloomington be a better spot for Detroit and Indianapolis' outdoor game.

Given that the IU football team doesn't really use it for anything... (I'm an alum, but yeah, the football team has always stunk.) /snark

Next up are the Cincinnati Cyclones. Though my first game was a Kalamazoo-Fort Wayne game when I was a few days old in 1988, one of the first games I actually remember was when the Cyclones came to Kalamazoo. The Cyclones had the perfect "bad guy" look, wearing red, black and silver, and with their menacing goalie logo. I've actually come to really like that original logo. Anyways, here you go with the Cincinnati Cyclones. (I'll have to do it in two parts, since there are only so many pics you can put up in one post.

The Cincinnati Cyclones took to the ice in 1992-93 wearing these uniforms.

1992-93_zps27fcd14c.png

For the 1993-94 season, the Cyclones changed the nameplate to white to match the uniforms.

1993-94_zps7aced107.png

For the 1994-95 season, the Cyclones changed their road jerseys to these black ones.

1994-95_zpsaf1b9430.png

The Cyclones went through a major redesign for the 1995-96 season replacing silver with gold and adding a new main logo.

1995-96_zps4a9593fa.png

For the 1998-99 season, the Cyclones added a black jersey.

1998-99_zps897d0821.png

For the 2001-02 season, the Cyclones again changed their look, this time to reflect that of their parent club, the Carolina Hurricanes. The Cyclones even use the 'Canes logo as a shoulder patch.

2001-02_zps70a941f2.png

The Cyclones added a black third jersey for the 2004-05 season bringing back the franchise's first logo.

When the IHL switched to Reebok, the Cyclones went with a more traditional look instead of using those godawful 'Bettman aprons'.

2006-07_zpsf40565a8.png

For the 2007-08 season, the Cyclones added a third jersey with diagonal script across the chest.

2007-08_zpsbb9aab0f.png

The next season, the silver third jersey was changed to try to unify the team's look.

2008-09_zps4c568404.png

For the 2010 Gridiron Classic, the Cyclones used this jersey based on the Bengals' uniforms.

2009-10_zpse361e392.png

The next season, the Cyclones began using their silver alternate jersey as their home jerseys, and still do to this day.

Up next are the Cleveland Lumberjacks

Those gold alternates for the Cyclones were great. I've got a signed replica hanging up in my closet right now.

I love this series so far. I clicked up expecting the usual dull concepts this place has fostered in recent years and I'm so glad I was proven wrong. Kudos.

Fun stuff JCRGrafix! I miss the IHL, and can't wait to see your take on the Salt lake Golden Eagles. Any intention of doing any of the the IHL teams that transferred to the AHL? I'd love to see the Utah Grizzlies, Grand Rapids Griffins, and Chicago Wolves!

I probably will, but they'll be after everybody else.
