  1. And in the next breath, they're telling people they want to build a new domed stadium in the south parking lot of Soldier Field, presumably with loads of ISFA bonds because they suddenly can't find $200 million they had just a second ago, no idea where it went. Now, call me crazy or a cynic if you must, but I am beginning to believe the McCaskey family may not have the sharpest business acumen.
  2. Having worked with and knowing some people in Omaha sports broadcasting, let me put it like this. Omaha is a sports-mad town. Remember, this was basically the only market where the UFL got something approximating a following. Omaha also has an unusually high number of high-capacity arenas for a city its size. BUT. You have established fandoms spending their hockey dollars on UNO and the Lancers. When Calgary marched in with the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights, I was told their marketing was mainly "Here's the highest-level product in town, you're welcome, come see it" and that went over about as well as the several other markets where Calgary salted the AHL earth before and after. You also have to consider that the NHL would probably want another shiny new arena for every expansion team they award, and like I said up there, Omaha has kind of a glut. Plus, basing NHL viability on the other hockey successes in a market that size feels a bit like giving a franchise to Ann Arbor, because look at how they turn out for the Wolverines. It seems like an NHL success in Omaha would require a high number of things to break just right all in sequence, and even then, your ceiling on success is about 0.6 Columbus.
  3. Volleyball is a sport where the contrast between teams doesn't matter quite as much, like baseball. Players of a given team are always going to be on one side of the net or the other, not intermingling. The contrast issue applies more to distinguishing the libero from the other five. That said, strictly on aesthetics, I don't want two similarly dressed teams facing each other on the court, either, and it shouldn't be that tough an ask in a seven-team league.
  4. Cripes, Philadelphia, the local minor (now indy) league team managed to do it better.
  5. Through the first couple of matches, I'm more optimistic on the PVF than I had been before the season. They seem to have their stuff together on presentation and fan experience. I just hope this doesn't turn out to be another AAF, where everything looked really polished and thought through out of the gate and then it was "Oops, we forgot to have money."
  6. That Supernovas tertiary logo is really nice and I hope it makes it onto merch. Beveled numerals on the Rise made me initially think of the old Buffalo Destroyers, but I think the US national VB teams used a similar number treatment for a few years as well.
  7. An unexpected financial lifeline has come into play today. Dwayne Johnson is now a board member of TKO, the Endeavor-owned conglomerate that operates WWE and UFC. This means, in theory, he now could have Ari Emanuel and the Saudi Kingdom's money to play with for his upstart football league, after the Fox money runs its course this season and if Redbird wants to sell. Looking forward to the expansion Baltimore Bonesaws and Philadelphia PowerSlaps.
  8. Still hoping they get worn instead of the white ones, because at least the gray pants have stripes.
  9. We have just seen a running back, on 3rd Down in a playoff game, get slowed down just enough to be stopped short of a 1st because a defender was able to get a hold of, pull, and tear his extra-long undershirt. So that trend may start fading.
  10. Should it actually happen (it will not,) I imagine it'll go about as well as the North American (baseball) League's entry in Maui, at a time when the circuit had Edmonton, Calgary, Yuma, and Zion, Illinois. This group can't get its logistics together on what markets will be in the league or what its schedule is, and you're going to expect them to coordinate Hawaiian travel? Furthermore, you're expecting weekend warrior players to commit to that kind of travel in exchange for like $250-500 a week?
  11. I feel like the numbering treatment is going to make or break the Lightning 3rd. Give me something that goes beyond the standard block they've been using for 20+ years, especially if it's a callback like the italicized, drop-shadowed modified block, or the electrified numbers most recently seen in Reverse Retro 2.0. The lack of shoulder patch feels like a whiff, given how nicely their simple primary logo scales down. It also would have been a great opportunity to modernize the old Florida Bolt shoulder patch, which was so much better than their original primary crest.
  12. Europe, South America, and The Moon are also in play.
  13. Just think how many brains had to malfunction in the same place at the same time for this to be the end result of the merger. 1.5 seasons for the UFL. Hammer the under.
  14. Not necessarily. Heck, on Nebraska, some of the players wear pants instead of shorts.
  15. 1. Desperate to get more money from suckers 2. Knows a tech buzzword and has no idea what goes into the development and implementation 3. Weirdly conspiratorial in addressing the public 4. Greatly overestimates his product's appeal 5. Spitting in the face of potential future revenue because of petty personal grievances Well, I think we've solved the mystery of the AFL's big forthcoming broadcast rights deal. Look for all the games streaming on X, The Everything App.
  16. The late-'80s version with the logo overlaid on the sleeve stripes is perfection for me. I saw one in person today and my wallet started getting twitchy. Were the Cowboys wearing a different uniform cut tonight? I don't remember the sleeve numbers on the doublestar jerseys being so small previously.
  17. Check the "Other" section under Football.
  18. That statement has enough clichéd and vapid corporate-speak in it to give a mid-level executive priapism.
  19. NBC has announced they will not be part of the broadcast package for The Mergéd League, not on the network, not on USA, not on Peacock, because, gosh darn it, they just have too much golf to show, and definitely not because of that other thing I mentioned in the quote above. https://awfulannouncing.com/nbc/usfl-xfl-games-wont-broadcast-golf.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
  20. No, I think any unnecessary protrusions from the uniforms would simply add another safety hazard to what is already a very dangerous sport.
  21. Eric Bodamer, known around here when you and I were mere tots as ebod39, posted last week that he was making the jump.
