  1. Have my fingers crossed for the Whipsnakes choosing Annapolis as their home venue.
  2. Here's a better look at the jerseys. My favorite of the bunch is probably Grand Rapids Rise due to their wordmark being the most legible. Would have preferred if the league logo wasn't centered the way it is. That works on the collars of NFL jerseys, but not very well for other sports IMO. They should consider make the numbers a little bigger. It's been stated before with other small leagues. There should be no repeating primary uniform colors in a 7 team league. This leagues has 2.5 red jerseys in this pics. I know opposing jersey contrast in volleyball isn't as import as in other sports, but I pity the folks that tune in to see a Vibe vs Rise game. With that said this league should have clash jerseys in their wardrobe for the liberos, so hopefully they're smart and have secondary/clash jerseys prepared for such a situation.
  3. Don't think any players were physically in attendance, but it appears they did a traditional draft.
  4. I like the combo West Virginia is wearing right now!
  5. I wonder if there's a reason they chose to give 2 of their teams bird logos, but neither is named after a type of bird? I guess have a bird for Grand Rapids Rise works if their bird is supposed to be a Phoenix rising from the ashes. San Diego Mojo is just plain silly branding for both the name and logo.
  6. It appears USA Volleyball is partnered with both leagues now. Pro Volleyball Federation, USA Volleyball Announce New Alliance – Pro Volleyball Federation
  7. So I reached out to LOVB via email regarding the team names a few days ago. Here is the reply I received earlier today. OOF! PVF easily wins the team branding battle between the 2 leagues. I just don't understand how having traditional North American style team names does not reflect the community a team is rooted in . So while PVF is going to give us the Omaha Supernovas vs the Atlanta Vibe, LOVB is committed to giving us LOVB Omaha Volleyball vs LOVB Atlanta Volleyball. Sheesh! LOVB better hope the quality of play in their league is drastically superior to PVF. I don't see too many people getting excited for those generic placeholder names and hieroglyphics they call logos. Technically the full name of the teams in this league is "League One Volleyball (City Name) Volleyball". Who thought this was a good idea? I was prepared to give this league the nod over PVF for having several of my favorite current players and the backing of USA Volleyball. This choice in team branding is a huge fumble in my eyes.
  8. Can't help but think they should have saved the name Valkyries for a possible expansion team in Minnesota. Given the history of Nordic settlers the state has.
  9. Might as well do a branding comparison post of the 2 Atlanta based clubs too. PVF's Atlanta Vibe LOVB Atlanta Volleyball I seriously hope LOVB's team branding are just placeholders. I refuse to believe they honestly thought these names and symbols would get people interested in their league. I'm not a fan of singular team names in general but Atlanta Vibe is a far superior team name than LOVB Atlanta Volleyball.
  10. Two things FIRST. Since neither league has a team based in DC or Baltimore I took the time out to look up the rosters to see where the players are from. LOVB has only announced a handful of players, and unless I overlooked someone none of them are from my local area. PVF however has 2 players from my home county that went to high schools from the same school district I came from. Rainelle Jones of the Columbus Fury and M'Kaela White of the Orlando Valkyries are both from Prince George's County, Maryland. So I guess I'll be rooting for those teams until PVF expands or more hometown players come into the league. SECOND. I was talking to a friend of mine that is also a volleyball fan, and they pointed out between the 2 leagues there's 16 clubs with the cities they've announced. We looked at the locations and noticed these leagues have a (combined) heavier presence in the middle part of the country than most leagues tend to have. Atlanta, GA (both leagues) Omaha, NE (both leagues) Madison, WI (LOVB) Salt Lake, UT (LOVB) Austin, TX (LOVB) Houston, TX (LOVB) Columbus, OH (PVF) Grand Rapids, MI (PVF) Orlando, FL (PVF) San Diego, CA (PVF) Las Vegas, NV (PVF) Dallas, TX (PVF 2025 expansion) Indianapolis, IN (PVF 2025 expansion) Kansas City (PVF 205 expansion) Is there a reason for this? I'm sure both leagues have done research before placing their teams anywhere, but 10 of these 16 clubs are in the middle of the US. The complete lack of any club in the northeast is surprising without further explanation. As well as just a single team on the west coast. We both agreed at some point PVF and LOVB will likely merge, in which one of the Atlanta and Omaha teams would more than likely end up relocating.
  11. Wasn't having both long and short sleeve shirt options the norm in soccer until fairly recently? As far as this league goes, I wonder if they will have a short sleeve jersey option? In women's/girls volleyball teams usually have long sleeve, short sleeve or sleeveless jerseys.
  12. From PVF website https://www.provolleyball.com/faqs/ Did a Google search and the top result (from May 17, 2023) says the year 1 salary on WNBA rookie contract wage scale is $62,285 to $74,305. While that's not $500K in Europe, it's way better than the $10-35K salary Athletes Unlimited offers it's volleyball players. It may be even a little more than the average general salary in the US.
  13. Got a look at some of this league's uniforms.
  14. PVF is already beating LOVB in terms of branding. I present you the branding for each league's respective Omaha based teams. PVF's Omaha Supernovas LOVB Omaha Volleyball And yes, that is both the name and logo for the LOVB team.
  15. Could be nothing but I've already seen people complaining about PVF's choice of game ball (Franklin). Could this be some USA Volleyball influence blocking PVF from using a higher rated equipment? LOVB is actually an established nationwide youth volleyball organization that's decided to form a pro league from my understanding. Technically the league's full name may actually be League One Volleyball Pro. FWIW there will also be an Omaha based team in LOVB. I've quickly noticed LOVB has several members of the US women's national team committed to playing in their, league while my brief research has only shown college draftees being shown as the faces of PVF (maybe some notable college alums, not sure). Agree with that take on AU. Like I said before, that league could be safe from collapse. There is an AU basketball league after all despite the WNBA and European women's basketball leagues existing. There is definitely a place for AU imo. The other two leagues are going to have to fight it out for that top tier spot.
  16. I believe this is the train of thought behind Athletes Unlimited. All of it's sports (basket, softball, lacrosse, etc) do the weekly draft with teams constantly changing. I can't get too heavily invested in AUV unless I personally knew a player in the league. Up until now AU has been the only televised pro volleyball available so I've tuned in because there has been no other option. Ideally AUV could coexist with which ever league ends up standing between PVF and LOVB. Sort of a de facto second tier/minor league if you will. I'm sure some former AUV players will jump ship to both PVF and LOVB. Changing teams week to week has to be unsettling for the players on some level. At least the other two league could give it's players a level of stability AU can't.
  17. First things first, congrats to the Texas Longhorns on winning the D1 national title! I have 2 theories on this. Two groups happened to have the same idea and proceeded to move forward with their plans unaware of the group. There may have initially been one group planning a single league. But for some reason their was a division on a matter, and some people broke off to form the other league. If I had to guess, a division could have come in regards to when the league would play. PVF is set to start playing game in late January through May. LOVB is set to start in November 2024, but I'm not sure how long their season will run. With a November start, there could be some overlap between the two leagues in 2025.
  18. I was checking my channel guide and was surprised to see that the NCAA division 1 women's volleyball championship is airing live on ABC. As a volleyball fan this caught me way off guard since the championship usually airs on ESPN2. I would have never expected a women's volleyball match outside of the gold medal match in the Olympics to air live on a major over the air broadcast network. In addition to that, there's going to be 2 new professional women's volleyball leagues starting in 2024. The Pro Volleyball Federation (PVF) and League One Volleyball ( going by abbreviation LOVB). Both these leagues have some pretty serious backing (LOVB is partnered with the USA Volleyball). Athletes Unlimited also has a volleyball league, but that league has an unusual model in that the teams change week to week selected by the top ranking players (best comparison would be to a fantasy team that changes every week). PVF and LOVB will both have a traditional city based team model. As a volleyball fan I'm all for getting more eyes on the sport as well as creating opportunities for American players to continue playing stateside after college, but couldn't help but notice the timing of all this coming off the US women's volleyball team finally winning gold at the recent Olympics. Does anybody think we are about to see a big push for girls/women's volleyball in the US? I've talked with some friends of mine that are involved in both youth and high school sports. According to them girls volleyball has had an increase in participation over the last decade. At some high schools, more girls have tried out for volleyball than basketball or soccer. I hope for the best out of all this. Although I fear they could go in the wrong direction with marketing. In addition to that at some point PVF and LOVB may end up merging, or we'd see one of the leagues go under. I don't see a scenario where both leagues coexist long term. Athletes Unlimited Volleyball could stick around since it has a very different model from what the other leagues are trying to do. Any thoughts/opinions?
  19. Celebration Bowl final score Division 2 National Championship final score
  20. Congrats to Cortland!!! When was the last time a public university not named Wisconsin-Whitewater won the Stagg Bowl? lol
  21. Stagg Bowl has been pretty good. Kinda looks like a intersquad scrimmage though lol
  22. PLL reeeeeeally needs to stop holding games at Gillette. This league ain't ready for NFL stadiums yet. Hopefully if the New England Revolution gets the green light to build a new stadium in Everett, MA the Cannons will be allowed to become a tenant.
  23. I like the new shade of pink. This is the shade they should have been using from day one. Not feeling the centered badge.
