I would argue that, when trying to build a brand, being unique and instantly recognizable is very important. Those aren't the only things needed to look good, but they do contribute to that.

I wouldn't be shocked if the Pats wear the red throwbacks again this week, although it would be unlikely. The players were apparently clamoring to keep them after the Detroit game, and the team only scheduled two games of them this season. If they want to use a third, Monday Night Football against the Bears (presumably with the starting QB coming back) is a great time to do it. But I also understand if they want to avoid the Super Bowl XX talk.

I'm disappointed we didn't get a scenario like that in New England this year. The team has Mac Jones, Marcus Jones, Jack Jones, and Jonathan Jones. If we really wanted to make all of that clear on the NOB, it would be Mac Jones, Mar. Jones, Ja. Jones, and Jo. Jones.

"Ornaments to athletes seeking attention"? My brother in Christ, it is not that serious. Steve Smith had a kid his name changed to Steve Smith Sr., and he clearly just wanted to mark that on his jersey. These are their names, so I would hope player preference is a significant part of the decision-making process here.

Michigan should wear navy over maize at home and split the road games between white over white and white over maize. I would do white pants on the road for the first part of the season and maize for the back half.

Michigan announced its Maize Out uniforms. Going monochrome in exactly the color you would expect from that name. Navy blue.

The difference there is that Notre Dame has always had strong Irish ties, and the Irish people have no problem with the name. It is believed the nickname draws from a description of Irish players on the football team by other members of the football team in a way they liked. If an Italian school named themselves the Fighting Irish, and Irish people didn't like the name but they kept it anyway, then it would be analogous. The issue is one group characterizing another in a way that is not appreciated and making it their own brand.

The players clearly prefer the tighter leggings to the regular socks, to the answer is obvious: striped leggings. Give them options for what to wear below the pants, but enforce that whatever it is matches the uniform. The other part here is for teams to stop making dumb decisions. The sock color should always match either the jersey or the helmet, it really is that simple.

Get ready for the Washington Primes!

Matthew Judon wore red socks while the rest of the Patriots wore the white ones with stripes this past Sunday. I think it looked pretty good. Would love to see those with a stripe that matches the jersey.

It can actually happen next year if both teams finish in the same place in their respective divisions. So yeah, it isn't happening until 2025.

Yep, it's the Sullivan endzones but not filled in.

Looks like the Pats are bringing out the throwback logo and endzones for Sunday. That wordmark doesn't match anything in their history, though. I think they're using a font for it they've also used on their social media. I think this is the font used for "KEYS" and "HAPPY" in these graphics. This is the throwback wordmark, and it doesn't seem to match what's on the field.

The Patriots have had the old "Pat the Patriot" branding in the stadium alongside the Flying Elvis for a while. They've also sold merch with both logos since at least the 2009 AFL anniversary season, if not earlier. They currently sell the 90's jerseys with the Flying Elvis, too. And they just got new uniforms with a partial rebrand in 2020. Despite all that, I don't think anyone in New England or otherwise is confused about the team's brand. Nobody would get confused if they went on Google and it was the old logo for a day. The history of the brand is part of the brand in the eyes of fans, and throwbacks help connect with older fans while also showcasing another design (and making money in the process). Fandom is typically passed down within families, so if you can't connect with a throwback, your parents probably can and they'll share their connection to it with you. I don't think they dilute a brand in the slightest.

Gillette Stadium looking good for this weekend.
