johnnysama
Lately, I've added quite a few MLB caps to my collection, some of them vintage, and I have noticed a few of these vintage caps are not made from the standard wool material, but from a nylon-like material (I have a Blue Jays, Expos, and Indians cap made from said nylon material). Why didn't this last long, I wonder? It was a nice alternative to the wool caps before the 2007 material switch. Does anybody have caps like this? johnnysama
Sure. One of the caps I own; you can tell it is a nylon-ish material by the texture. I honestly do not know how many teams went this route, but the use of this nylon material was common in the 1980s.
Jungle Jim
The first authentic New Era cap I ever saw in person was made of that material. A friend showed up at the park on night in the early 80s with a red St. Louis Cardinals. I thought it was the most awesome thing I had ever seen. Well, almost the most awesome. johnnysama
Does anybody else have anything to say about these nylon caps? I'm surprised they didn't catch on and were replaced by wool by the early 1990s(ish).
Watchman
I own a Blue jays one myself. Find the cap great.
Wally1912
In addition to the teams you listed, here are a couple other teams that used all-nylon caps.Orioles:Astros:Others like the Padres, Braves, & Brewers used wool caps with nylon front panels. The Mojo Maniac
Yeah I've read about this being mostly a 70s/80s phenomenon too. I actually thought the nylon was limited to the front panel for the teams who had a contrasting front panel cap, but johnnysama you taught me something new in that some solid-colored caps (like the Cards) were all nylon. From San Berdoo to Kalamazoo.
johnnysama
^ The Indians cap I mentioned is an example of a solid-color cap made of nylon.
