It's irrelevant how it happened.

It completely tarnishes the ultimate honor a team can give to a player.

For the team to ask, it's completely disrespectful to the player. FOr another player to ask the retired player, it's an incredibly selfish move. For the retired player to volunteer to give it up, that's a slap to the organization that genuinely thought they were giving him a great honor, only to find out he didn't care.

Also, it just seems silly that it creates a situation where teams can have numbers retired for more than one person, which in theory, is impossible (but obviously happens.)

Once you relinquish the honor, it should be gone forever, and if the new player with that number becomes a HOFer or whatever, then it gets retired for him, not the original player.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the fact that the Denver Broncos unretired Frank Tripucka's number 18 for Peyton Manning when he signed as a free-agent in 2012. I like the idea of just honoring the number or recognizing the player rather the all-out retiring and taking the number out of rotation. Otherwise you'll end up like the Boston Celtics are now with players wearing non-traditional jersey numbers. (I'm not a fan of numbers above 55 or that contain a 6, 7, 8 or 9)

You know the only reason they ever used those numbers exclusively is so the refs could display the # of the fouling player. Largest is 55... five on one hand and five on the other. If they would've had to show 7 it would've looked like 52.
