The Ten Greatest NFL'ers of All-Time

Some time back ESPN the magazine as well as ESPN.com did a poll among every football person employed by the ESPN family, wether it be espn radio,TV,whatever, and asked them to list their top 10 NFL'ers of all time. Each player was assigned a point value going from 1-10 based on each voter's lists, and then the results were published when it was all compiled.Jim Brown was the top choice, with Jerry Rice,Barry Sanders,Walter Payton,Deacon Jones and others rounding out the eventual top 10.So with that I decided to poll my friends here at the CCSLC to come up with who WE think is the greatest footballer of them all.I realize that since most of us never saw a Jim Brown or for some even Walter Payton play that this list may be slighted towards more modern-day players which is fine because it shows maybe who we think is the best of our time.So here we go,I'll kick it off with my top ten of who I think are the best to ever play the game

1-Jerry Rice...NFL's All-Time leading reciever

2-Jim Brown....played in a 14 game season and retired at 30

3-Walter Payton....biggest heart to ever play the game

4-Barry Sanders....put up huge numbers in only 10 seasons

5-John Elway....carried Denver to 3 SB's before they finally carried him to one

6-Joe Montana....4 Super Bowls...3 SB MVP's

7-Emmitt Smith....NFL's All-Time leading rusher

8-Lawrence Taylor....Best defensive player I've ever seen

9-Brett Favre...3 straight MVP's

10-Ray Lewis...the 2nd best defensive player I've ever seen

1. Jim Brown - could have been the NFL's greatest RB ever.

2. John Elway - the greatest overall QB in NFL history, IMO.

3. Emmitt Smith - truly the best RB in NFL history.

4. Jerry Rice - greatest reciever ever, period.

5. Dan Marino - the greatest pure passer to play the game.

6. Bruce Smith - best defensive lineman I've ever seen play.

7. Walter Payton - had the most desire and passion for the game.

8. Rich Jackson - the most feared DE in his day.

9. Steve McNair - toughest player I've ever seen.

10. Jonny Unitas - the man.

1-Brett Favre - Simply a magician, pulling victory out of a hat time and time again.

2-Jim Brown

3-Jerry Rice

4-Joe Montana

5-Lawrence Taylor

6-Barry Sanders

7-OJ Simpson

8-John Elway

9-Alan Page

10-Walter Payton

11-Ronnie Lott

12-Ray Lewis

13-Anthony Munoz--gotta give some love to the O-Line

14-Emmitt Smith

15-Cris Carter

Guys who could have been there if not for...

Bo Jackson--imagine if he'd been healthy

Jim McMahon--he has one of the best winning % of all time. He was only healthy one entire season in his prime, the Bears Super Bowl Season. He was a winner, plain and simple.

Deion Sanders--If he'd not played baseball, he'd be considered the greatest D-back ever

Archie Manning--he was stuck on a bad team

EDIT: I knew I'd forget someone. Dan Marino belongs on there. I'm sure there are others (particularly, pre-1980) that I forgot.

Only listed three QB's, but others that could be there: Brett Favre, Joe Montana, Otto Graham.

There are a lot of Broncos on there, but remember, I've seen them play, I know how good they are. The 70's Orange Crush Defense was one of the best in NFL history but they were always in the shadow of the 70's Steelers Iron Curtain Defense.

Grange would be on the list under 'Innovater'

There are 8 TRUE Broncos on that list along with 4 that played or plays for Denver but are known for the other teams they were on.

You wanted my top 10? Here it is:

1. Jim Brown

2. Joe Montana

3. Walter Payton

4. Jerry Rice

5. John Elway

6. Johnny Unitas

7. Barry Sanders

8. Dick Butkus

9. Frank Gifford (people forget he really was that good)

10. O.J. Simpson (people forget how good he was before ... well, you know what)

By the way, I didn't put some people on the list who played years ago. And they probably belong somewhere among the greatest. They are called legends for good reason. Players such as:

Bronko Nagurski

Red Grange

Jim Thorpe

Sammy Bough

Otto Graham

Yeah, before being a sideline reporter <_<

Or a movie star.

How can I forget Detective Nordberg?

Lt. Frank Drebin : Hector Savage. From Detroit. Ex-boxer. His real name was Joey Chicago.

Ed Hocken : Oh, yeah. He fought under the name of Kid Minneapolis.

Nordberg : I saw Kid Minneapolis fight once. In Cincinnati.

Lt. Frank Drebin : No you're thinking of Kid New York. He fought out of Philly.

Ed Hocken : He was killed in the ring in Houston. By Tex Colorado. You know, the Arizona Assassin.

Nordberg : Yeah, from Dakota. I don't remember it was North or South.

Lt. Frank Drebin : North. South Dakota was his brother. From West Virginia.

10. Lance Alworth

Oh and yes Ray Guy needs to be in the Hall of fame. He is not in the top 10 but was and still is the best punter the NFL has seen.

Names that others have forgot that are out there:

QB Terry Bradshaw, best bad weather QB ever.

QB- Roger Staubach

QB- Steve Young, overshadowed by following Montana.

DL- Randy White and Ed "Too Tall" Jones....

We need a link on the greatest D lines of all time...

What would have been of Kenny Easley's career if not cut short?

"Try not to have a good time ... This is supposed to be educational."

STEEL Curtain, not Iron Curtain. <_<

'sokay... My wife made the opposite slip-up in a European history class once. I love teasing her about that. :D

Iron is the major component in steel, so no wonder they're confused. ^_^

I saw, I came, I left.
