49ers to move to boston?

Okay, I also don't believe they'll move, but:

Like CC said, the Patriots play in Foxboro, Connecticut. They aren't just Boston's team, they're THE team for Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island(Some Vermont and New Hampshire folks are closet Bills fans, and I don't think Maine cares about footballl - just lobster.) I don't think it's impossible, just that no Bostonians would really take to a team in Boston. The Pats have won the favor of those people by winning two out of the last three years, and unless the 49ers could promise an immediate Superbowl(cause all 2-14 teams go on to win a Superbowl)m they would have a hard time getting accepted, and ultimately wouldn't be worth it. Let's not forget that BEFORE the drought, the Red Sox won their fans in Boston over by winning five World Series over nineteen years.

So, I guess I'm just saying that I'm sure a move IS possible, but it just wouldn't make sense from that standpoint.

Foxboro is in Mass.

And you think the Sox have fans cause of 5 World Series 90 years ago? Hate to tell you but most Sox Fans are not over 100.

Heh, shows how well I know the states right above me - I got Foxboro mixed up with Foxwoods(which is deifnitely in Connecticut) and secondly, the proper is spelling of the town in Mass where the Pats play is Foxborough. Go me.

As for the Sox comments - yes. I sincerely don't believe as many families would have stayed Sox fans throughout the generations if the living fans' grandfathers hadn't known so much of a winning tradition. If they hadn't won to begin with, it's hard to spend 86 years waiting for them to win again.

Believe it or not, alot of fans root for the home team because they are the home team. Not because they are winners. How do you explain the love of the Cubs and Bears in Chicago? (bears) One championship 20 years ago?

Boston loved the patriots before they won the Super Bowls. It was just overshadowed by the insane love of the Sox.

There would be MUCH better places to move the 49ers if they had to move. San Fran is the best place for them, but Los Angelos or Las Vegas are better than Boston.

I agree with you, my point was more I don't think a team actually in Boston would do too well against the Pats, which have absolutely gained a larger fan base since they started winning - I even have a few friends on the Island who didn't even watch football till the Pats started winning, now they watch each game. I could be wrong, but like you said, there's more than one better place to move the 49ers than Boston.

The Patriots actually played in Boston for 11 years. When they agreed to merge with the NFL is when Foxboro was begun. Fenway Park was not a good football stadium. They also played on Boston College, Boston University, and Harvards fields during those years.

The Patriots have Boston's territorial rights as part of the 75-mile radius around their stadium per the NFL Constitution and By-Laws. While Al Davis moved the Raiders to L.A., true, he was able to keep them there due to a loophole in the By-Laws that has since been closed, at least in cases where Team B tries to move into Team A's territory.

If the 49'ers, or any other NFL team, attempted to play one home game (let alone move) anywhere within that 75 mile radius, the NFL and all 31 of the other teams, they'd (1) vote unanimously to revoke the franchise rights of whoever did it, and (2) sue their asses off.

First post, so please bear with me. I will talk about the Pats first, then on the OP.

Foxboro is basically in between Boston and Providence. In fact for the last two AFC Championship games hosted by the Pats, the NFL and media were headquartered in Providence, not Boston. That may have been due to a greater number of beds available in shorter notice.

Secondly, since the 'niners have had issues in attempting to suruce public financing for a new stadium (and subsequently lost a Super Bowl), couldn't these people from Boston just be financeers for a new stadium in the Bay area? Either San Fran, San jose or Santa Clara County?

I remember a vote being passes for a new Niners stadium in 2002 at the latest. It was during the Willie Brown administration for sure, but it is now 2005 and not even a shovel has been lifted. They have had worse issues than teh Padres did with Petco Park!

proposed A's stadium.

i have heard rumors that the bay area teams have talked about doing the NY thing and share stadiums if the A's build a new stadium or move to San Joe. ive heard they could renovate the colesium to an all football stadium so that both teams would use it. i dont see how that could work though. i know a lot of niners fans who wont go to the coliseum when the niners are playing the raiders

by the way both stadiums are in there respective cities. i looked it up

he was telling me in a phone conversation earlier that york was talking with him about a stadium deal with some investors in boston.

I noticed that you said "about a stadium deal with investors in Boston" not "with some investors about a stadium deal in Boston".

The money's in Boston, but the stadium is in San Fran.

I wouldn't read too muuch about the "in Boston" part. Isn't Frank McCourt, the guy who just bought the Dodgers, from Boston? It's only where the owner is, not where they're going to move the team.

Even though we're talking about the stadium and not the team, there are plenty of situations where a team has an out of town owner.
