Nextel Cup to switch to Sprint Cup in '07

Posted Jun 15, 2005, 9:09 AM ET by Tom Biro

It's all NASCAR, all the time this morning at AdJab, apparently. Okay, probably not. Earlier this week, the Knight Ridder's Jim Utter reported that NASCAR would ditch the Nextel Cup moniker from its top racing circuit and replace it with the Sprint Cup name as of the 2007 season. While no nifty new (again) logo has been made public, it is believed that this information will be available in the next few months.

Unfortunately, this leaves the Nextel brand as looking like a lame duck for the next year and a half, but apparently that's okay. It doesn't appear as if NASCAR is bothered by a third name change in a short period of time, either. We'll see if the series, which has been growing in mainstream popularity in the last few years, will have a bit of fan confusion, as it had been known as the Winston Cup for decades, and has since flipped once and soon, twice. Then again, half the people you have conversations with still slip and call it Winston Cup to this day, so perhaps the Nextel Cup name won't stick long enough. What the megamerging telcos have to worry about is that now, the public will just begin calling it Sprint, well before the 2007 season rolls around.

Sprint Cup? Sure it's a cool name and fits perfectly with auto racing, but would anyone know that it's named after a company unless you see the series logo? For years, I had no idea the Winston Cup was actually a corporate name. Maybe that's the idea

I saw, I came, I left.

Here's an idea. Since Sprint/Nextel are the same company, why not name the overall series the Nextel Cup, with the last 10 races (which are now called the Chase for the Championship) being called the "Sprint to the Championship."

Makes sense, no?

now here is some consipracy theroy.

There are plenty of people that think Kansas City has the inside track (no pun intended) to landing the NASCAR Hall of Fame. It just so happens that Sprint's World HQ is in Kansas City. Does this mean anything?

This Hall of Fame is going to be permanent. I think if NASCAR decides to put the hall of fame in Kansas City, it wouldn't because of Sprint's sponsorship. I'm not quite sure how long Sprint/Nextel will sponsor the Cup. Sure it's a long term-deal, but the Hall of Fame will last much longer than the sponsorship.

epper, I like your idea :)

How about The Earnhardt Cup?

My idea exactly. I was gonna say why not name it something like the Earnhardt cup? But then wouldnt #8 have to win it every year? :P

I'll believe that when I actually see ground broken for it.

Charlotte's got to be the odds-on favorite to get this. It's redneck central, after all.

I think there is or might have been a merger between Nextel and Sprint. This is the reason of the change

Yes, Sprint bought Nextel for $35B back in December.

Did they make any preliminary announcement on their branding strategy?

It may be good for them to keep both brands alive in the marketplace (That's what Rogers is doing "up here" after purchasing Fido)

Great Idea!

How about: The SPRINT for the CUP?

3 Requests.

#1 Screw Kansas. Charlotte, Daytona, or keep it in Talladega..that's the only place for the hall of fame.

#2 Sprint Cup? Goody's Dash. Goody's Dash Series needs to return.

#3 The Sprint CUP series better have a cup for the damn trophy.
