Stanford--------???????????--------Cardinal

Stanford was the Indians.

. . . and the Cardinals (with the S for the bird, not the color) in between.

Let's also not forget --

Carthage -- Redmen -- Red Men (whatever?)

Lehigh -- Engineers -- Brown & White -- Packers -- Engineers -- Mountain Hawks -- NEXT??? (Go Leopards)

Miami (OH) Redskins -- RedHawks

Dartmouth -- Indians -- Big Green

William & Mary -- Indians -- Tribe (what's the difference, one might ask)

Siena -- Indians -- Saints

If you go beyond relatively recent history, there are countless examples from when nicknames were less formally recognized. For example, Maryland was usually called the Old Liners before the Terrapins name was proposed and became universally accepted. For other examples, see the attached link about ACC nickname origins -- very interesting.

Wasn't this done just a week ago?

Go to the ncaa website. One of the media guides has the changes listed in it.

I don't recall that it was. In any event, I think this is an interesting topic (obviously).

Teams at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst were called the Redmen prior to the change to Minutemen.

What do they call the female teams?

In about an hour women?

my girlfrend would kill me for that one....

Wait until you have kids. That slows things down even more.

EDIT -- Post No. 400. I should have saved it for something more substantive. Damn.

Oral Roberts -- Titans -- Golden Eagles (Rejected Name -- 900 ft. Jesuses :P )

For those who don't know the story (from rotten.com):

25 May 1980 Televangelist Oral Roberts senses an "overwhelming holy presence" and hallucinates a 900-foot-tall Jesus Christ. The deity reaches down and picks up a 60-story hospital, bragging to the Oklahoman preacher: "See how easy it is for Me to lift it!"

"If I Only Had a Brain" by MC 900 Ft. Jesus is still one of my favorite songs of all time.

No it was not... before was the school name changes not the team name. You are wrong also the media guide does not list the team name changes.

I thought it was the same thread. My bad.

But the NCAA media guide I read does list school name changes (not nicknames).

Still, this isn't really news, and should probably be moved to the Sports Forum or something.
