leopard88
Still, this isn't really news, and should probably be moved to the Sports Forum or something.I don't think this is any less appropriate for this category than the recent thread on unusual high school nicknames. That doesn't mean that that shouldn't have been moved as well (I don't think so, but that is my opinion), but assuming it was in the right place, then I think this is too. FiddySicks
OK, not NCAA, but the local community college here in Tahoe went from the LTCC Peaks (as in mountain peaks) to the LTCC Fightin' Koakanee Salmon. I guess I was wrong. Any particular reason for all of the changes (though I'm sure I can answer the question for myself on their website)? Moser316
I could be wrong on these, but I think the reasons for the changes in UWM's name are as follows:Milwaukee State to WSU-Milwaukee -- name change from State Teacher's Colleges to Wisconsin State UniversityWSU-Milwaukee to UWM -- in 1956, the school was absorbed into the University of Wisconsin system through a merger between WSU-Milwaukee and the UW Extension office in Milwaukee (the rest of the Wisconsin State University schools were eventually absorbed by the early 1970's)UWM Cardinals to UWM Panthers -- not sure, but I'm guessing they did this to differentiate from Big Brother in Madison

If you were asking why they switched, I have no idea. Saint Zephyr III
I know in San Antonio, though they don't have a football team, changed their names.University of the Incarnate Word Crusaders -> Cardinals.Yet I wonder how many colleges have changed the name of their college specifically. I know Texas State University used to be Southwest University, which some locals still call it.
