I'm on the clock. Is Willie McCovey still available?

yes

Now that is shocking.

I was actually going to take him, but brush selected Eddie Murray for me, I should of told him I changed my mind, I was going to make the selection myself, but I fell asleep.

I'm not really sure where the Eddie Murray hate is coming from.

Eddie Murray is the best first baseman in the AL during the 1980's, period.

Is Rafael Palmeiro the best first baseman in the AL during the 1990's? I'd say no, and at best its debatable. Could you ever make the argument Rafael Palmeiro was the best first baseman in baseball? Again I'd say no.

Could you do so for Eddie Murray? Yes you can.

If you say that Rafael Palmeiro is the better player then Eddie Murray your basically saying the late 90's to early 2000's had better overall players. If one guy spends his career being the best or second best at his position just about every single year during his prime, while the other is never considered much above a 2nd tier guy for his position, I have to go with the guy who was considered to be the dominating player more, no matter what his numbers are.

Eddie Murray was easily the more dominating first baseman during his career compared to the players around him then Rafael Palmeiro was. I don't even think that's debatable. I don't think you can say Palmeiro was the better player then Eddie Murray without being biased towards the 1990's-2000's as a whole over the 1980's.

The issue there is, is that Murray played in a time when there wasn't much competition among 1B, and the talent, for that era, just wasn't that concentrated in the position. Murray was a very good player who aged fairly well but probably held on a little too long, and while he was a good player, wasn't the same player he was in his prime.

Although FWIW you could make a case for Mattingly, Carew, or Cooper for the same time period.

You compare it to a player like Palmeiro or Bagwell... did the 90s objectively have better players? No, not overall. Was it the mother:censored:ing golden age of first basemen, steroid aided or not? Absolutely.

Palmeiro, Bagwell, Thomas, McGwire, Thome, Galaragga, McGriff... just an insane level of talent that happened to make the major leagues at the same time.

Look at the era though. Home runs are king. 1st base is the number one position for offense. Its natural to think that would be the position benefiting the most from it. Of course these guys are putting up insane numbers. They're playing in an era that's custom built for it. You can't classify a 1/3 of the league as having great 1st baseman. Great by my definition in this case is above ordinary. The 10th best first baseman in the league isn't great. It's impossible for him to be. He's too close to the average player at that position and if you do consider him great then your diluting the word.

You play first base during the steroid era, your going to have alot of points taken from you. 30+ home run seasons at that position just aren't that unusual.

I just cannot put probably the fourth or fifth best guy from his era over probably the most dominant guy from his era when were talking about the same position, and that goes for anybody.

As for the second point, Cooper and Carew I'd say no to both pretty easily. Carew just doesn't play enough and is already past his prime by then. Same thing with Cooper to a degree. Has that stretch early on, but just fades too quickly.

Mattingly is the only guy really with a case. Problem with Mattingly though again were talking '84 through '89. Murray gets all ten years. '85 to '89 Mattingly's the better player, no question about it. But from 1980-1983 Mattingly isn't even there and those are Murray's prime years. I gotta go Eddie for that tenure.

I apologize for picking out of turn. With nash's talk of selling/folding the team, I saw bruschi saying I was on the clock and thought nash had indeed folded. That's my mistake, I should have caught that.

OK fellas, I'm going to be out until around 4-5pm but I'll be checking in via my iPhone. If my turn comes up while I'm out and my number one choice is still available, I'll submit the pick as soon as possible. If he's not, then I'll make the pick when I get home. Sorry for any delay. We seem to have a pretty good pace going today.
