Thanks to the 1 helmet rule, we'll never again have a fun season long event like the AFL 50th Anniversary.

I know it's not actually true, but it feels like the only pictures in existence of that Cardinals v Orioles-Dressed-As-Browns game feature Sidney Ponson.

Go Astros!

Go Texans!

Go Rockets!

Go Javelinas!

That's the one that comes up first in Google searches, but there really aren't too many other there either ...

Have we forgotten about Memphis?

What about Memphis? They've never worn Vancouver throwbacks.

The New Jersey Nets wore New York Nets home throwbacks on several occasions, including in the 2003 Finals.  And they wore road throwbacks a few times in their last season in New Jersey.

(Though the home New York Nets throwback was a style that the team also wore after it moved to New Jersey.)

Which version?  The originals or the throwbacks?

The throwbacks are not accurate.  The originals had the stripe more or less on the front of the jersey and shorts, with the wordmark and number off center to the viewer's left.  The throwbacks had the stripe more to the side of the jersey and shorts, with the wordmark and number centered.

The only difference is the number font.  The Nets switched to varsity numbers in 1976-77, their first year in the NBA.  Here is a shot of Dr. J wearing this style in a Sports Illustrated photo shoot with Dave Cowens, for the heartbreaking "One Big League" cover.

Of course, on account of some dirty dealing by the Knicks, which resulted in a surprise "territorial fee" being levied on the Nets at the last minute, the team had to sell Erving.  So he never suited up in that style uniform; nor did he ever dribble an NBA ball in a Nets uniform.

The Nets were inconsistent with the number style from then on.

The last season with these uniforms, 1988-89, featured varsity numbers.

I prefer the varsity numbers.

That's not true.  The old version was also off center, unlike the current version.

If you look at the originals, a line drawn down the center of the jersey would go between the T and S and splits the second digit.

On the throwbacks, it would go between the E and T and between the digits.

Ah, that's true. Thanks for pointing that out.

I guess I tend to overlook that because I regard it as merely a rationalisation of the design.
