  1. I once was a big defender of the set, but ever since I moved to Denver it just feels so tired. The team's performance of late hasn't helped, but seeing those jerseys and that logo all over the place have really attuned me to their flaws. The orange shade is too faded, the jersey design clearly doesn't work with an orange base (and the white uniform has always felt dull), and the logo's aesthetic has been copied to the point of overexposure. It was a revolutionary uniform for the time and incredibly important to the team's history. However, it's long-past time to move on to something new. The white helmet doesn't really work with the all-orange set, but at least it gets the team a little bit further away from a navy base.
  2. Dave Krieg was a passable quarterback, and Steve Largent got into Canton.
  3. Meanwhile, the Giants are committed to being a "few points above or below .500" team and will likely not add the starting pitching help they need.
  4. His intro picture looks like Hide the Pain Harold/Internet Historian. So much pain hidden behind that smile. He's probably gonna implode even more.
  5. More importantly - it was a Dan Snyder idea. Anything that came from him would be thoroughly rejected by the fans. If you want to wash away the stink of Snyder completely, the name has to go too. Also, that Oilers throwback is really ruined by not moving the TV numbers to the shoulders. Consistent stripes should be consistent widths if you want to do them right.
  6. Agreed - if it was pure Busorama without any of the cartoon junk on top of it, it'd work much better. Ever since the Big A stopped being the scoreboard, I've largely seen it as irrelevant to the brand. It's as relevant to the brand as the steamboat chimneys at GAPB, IMHO. My favorite cap logo of the Angels basically tells the Big A to piss off: Had Disney ownership moved the Big A back into the stadium, we'd be singing a different tune with its brand relevance. However, as long as it sits in the parking lot, it's irrelevant.
  7. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you make the observation that most royal/kelly teams (outside of the modern Canucks) looked moribund and lost a lot? Whalers when they were green-heavy, the latter half of the pre-Cuban Mavs, the '90s Seahawks, etc.?
  8. The font was "almost" to a good point. It's ITC Busorama-adjacent with some flare serifs. However, what the Angels really should be using is ITC Busorama straight-up. It captures that "Hollywood" vibe of the '97-'01 set, but doesn't have the more gimmicky elements of that look. If only ITC made a digital version that had all the alternate characters.
  9. The Seahawks were completely absent in the ‘90s Seattle sports zeitgeist. Nobody on a national level remembers Cortez Kennedy the way they do for Ken Griffey Jr. or Gary Payton (but they should). Also, the Seahawks almost went to LA in the ‘90s, IIRC.
  10. That’s the difference in lighting and photographic medium (135mm film vs digital).
  11. Comparing the Seahawks' retro outfits to their modern ones is like comparing the two blue liveries of the Gresley A4 (LNER Garter Blue and BR Express Passenger Blue): Both are good liveries, but one has brighter colors and an overall more "cheerful" appearance. The other, more modern take, has a darker and busier look that still feels right. It's totally reasonable to prefer one over the other - and to seek a proper hybrid of the two (brighter blue for the Seahawks and less detailing overall, the later blue A4 with a brighter base and valences restored, etc.). Besides, both the Seahawks and the A4 have worn outfits/liveries very inappropriate for them: Absolutely - but Denver returning to that faded-y orange screwed up the look. Seattle thankfully hasn't messed up their colors like that.
  12. Nice work! My suggestion would be to avoid double outlines, just to improve legibility. Double outlines on Old English, as I learned the hard way, can wreak havoc on the legibility.
  13. This is why I hate working with digital editions of classic fonts that don’t have all of the alternate characters/ligatures. ITC Serif Gothic is one of the biggest offenders here. Do tell about the different logos, please!
  14. If anything, it proved that those uniforms were over-appreciated. They're good, but they're not "OMG so amazing!" - the Kachina is an B+ outfit.
  15. If it’s classic 4chan, then I must post my cringey bathroom renovation that will obviously attract “females.”
  16. If only Futura and Gill Sans had condensed variants that weren't, y'know, trash. The Art Deco revivalism would've called for more sans-serif fonts, but sadly we got Industria and other condensed slabs and sans's instead. If people wanted a better Factory Pomo/Art Deco revival font, ITC Busorama was right there. Sadly, since .otf wasn't "a thing" in the '90s, there was no good way to digitize the alternates and the font fell to the wayside.
  17. It really didn’t translate well to Jersey form. This was done by the Swamp Dragon’s firm. It’s a shame he’s such a jackanape, because he had some ok insights.
  18. Honestly, these flag designs would be better as either corporate-style city logos (e.g., a website banner or a social media avatar) or license plates. Both don’t contain the inherent symbolism of a flag and can be changed up/opted out of by anybody. Hell, one of our designers here did an excellent job with license plates! But again, plates and web logos are inherently different from flags. Trying to combine the two art forms results in the “2010s graphic design” aesthetic that just looks tiring now.
  19. The Milwaukee People’s Flag is the most egregious offender in this regard. It looks like it was meant for merchandise and not much else. It’s very much a product of bourgeois white Milwaukee, which happened to be where I hung out the most in the city when I lived there. It also is way too similar to Reno’s actual flag (in the same “merch” style). The “merch” style of flag very much misunderstands the historical circumstances behind the DC/Chicago/Southwestern flags, leading to an artificial sameness.
  20. More often than not, the state vexillology projects are geared towards a distinct mercantilism, namely “what would look good on a coffee mug or a phone case” and not something that would resonate with the state populace. This same thought process gives us the People’s Flag of Milwaukee or any number of seal-on-a-bedsheet fixes. Merchandise should not be the first concern with flag design, but here we are.
  21. Laser Kiwi actually was good in terms of symbolism, certainly more than any of the “sports logo” designs that made it to the final rounds. Laser Kiwi is a joke, yes. But it’s also a joke that poked massive holes in “Key’s Folly” and is an important lesson in flag design.
  22. If you knew Arizona, I’d suggest a different list. - Florence, AZ - Golden Valley, AZ - Apache Junction, AZ - Wittmann, AZ - Three Points, AZ - Williamson, AZ Yes, my knowledge of Arizona comes entirely from the podcast Small Town Murder and this thread. Also, how has Florence not been recommended earlier? Building an arena in a literal prison town seems like something the NHL could get behind.
  23. It’s fine. Perfectly adequate. It could be better, but the 25th anniversary one proved it could be worse.
  24. I’m also of the opinion that the older, simpler logo has way less visual clutter. This version, with a black spoked wheel and yellow “B” outlined in black is so much cleaner than the multitude of outlines that the logo received in the ‘90s. While I’m not for oversimplification, the trend of double outlines looks very out-of-date, even tacky now.
