  1. This was only a matter of time - a bunch of ex-Deadspin writers created a new site and they're going for the paid subscription model. https://defector.com/ I might give it a go. There's some good talent on that roster.
  2. I never disliked Russillo before that podcast, but I do now. He was completely :censored:ing useless on that particular episode and was both -sidesing things (he thinks he's so smart for always taking the "people are incapable of understanding nuance and always want to take one side or the other when the issue is much more complicated" position. No doy, meathead. You're not smarter than everyone or the first person to point out that a person can support two seemingly competing stances. Simmons was just his usual vacuous self. Kept comparing the protests to things in sports, which felt disrespectful to the moment and came across as incredibly tone deaf. Neither one of them seemed to grasp the enormity of this particular movement. To their credit they've both said they didn't give it the tone or respect it deserved and Simmons has had black activists and athletes on his shows to discuss it since then, but still. It was a bad look and now I can't shake Russillo's agro attitude.
  3. 46 writers were laid off by The Athletic yesterday. That's not a good sign.
  4. Speaking of overzealous calls, always hated this call because it sounds like the guy knows he's auditioning for a major league role, goes on way too long, and in doing so it sounds like he's yelling a prepared sound bite, which always sound worse than whatever spontaneous thing comes out in the moment. It was a championship, yes, but it's also the Calder Cup and you'd find 0 people who Cleveland who'd say this championship ended their drought so he's at 14 out of 10 and he needs to be at like a 9.
  5. Booger says dumb :censored: and gets all the attention for how bad he is, but for my money it's Tessitore who made that team unlistenable. That guy's demeanor and voice is just so annoying and he tried to heighten the Monday Night experience. Stop yelling at me, Tess!
  6. This is probably in here already. Randy Moss left the Vikings after 2004, they changed to these awful uniforms in 2006, but he came back for a 4 game stint in 2010, which I don't even remember.
  7. If tied at the end of regulation the winner will be determined by running through Olmec's Temple, etc.
  8. Yikes. That looks really bad on them. It was probably Nephew Kyle's job to remove the Kobe stuff, but he had too many cocktails at whatever LA nightclub he frequents and forgot.
  9. - Vipers green on green on yellow. Out there looking like a 1970's kitchen. My grandmother had a refrigerator that was that exact shade of green. The white road uni isn't so bad, I'm still not mentally prepared to see the all green home unis. They might be so hideous they actually come out the other side and look good. I agree the snake head logo should've been on the helmets. - Roughnecks asking the question, "what would it look like if the Patriots had a red alternate jersey?", and the answer, as it turns out, is ehh. - Seattle Dragons - I love these colors together, but that logo needed a few more passes, thicker lines. It's bringing down what would be a pretty fun set. I even like how it extends to the bottom of the helmet, Michigan Panthers style, but it needs work. Other nitpick, the side stripe terminating at the waist. Should've either left it off or made it squiggly to match the pants stripe. A brighter green would help too. - New York Guardians - My favorite helmet in the league. Really striking. Love the simplicity of the uniforms. I think these are my all around favorites. - St Louis Battlehawks - I've always been a fan of football helmets that utilize the entire space and treat the helmet not just as a canvas to slap the logo upon the side of, but as it's own accessory to the nickname. The Rams, Vikings, Bengals, Eagles, Seahawks, Chargers, and Birmingham Bolts are good examples of this. The New York Guardians helmet is successful in this way too. They could've just placed the logo on the side, but instead blew it up and gave it a winged helmet. I love it. The uniform below almost doesn't matter when you have that thing on top, but they look nice too. - DC Defenders - I have these 2nd behind New York. Really love the simplicity of the red and white, but with the lightning bolts and the all-red adding some extra jazz to the uniform. Don't love the name "Defenders", but they might have my favorite logo in the league. I love how the crossed lightning bolts read as an abstract DC - LA Wildcats - If it weren't for the Vipers these would be in bottom slot. The name and the logo both feel rushed (Sports didn't need another Wildcats), and I don't like the color hierarchy they've chosen. Dallas Renegades - I really like what they've chosen to do with the helmet. It's an inventive take on the usual helmet conventions and I think the thin red stripe sandwiched between the thicker black stripes on top of a light blue helmet with the black facemask is really sharp. The logo is whatever, I like something I did better, but it gets the point across. The uniforms below them are the most "Late Stage Arena Football" nothing uniforms in this league.
  10. 5 Latvian goaltenders have started at least 1 game in the NHL. This year's Blue Jackets with Elvis Merzlikins and Matiss Kivlenieks have two of them.
  11. it was a childhood nickname, but I, I mean, my team of writers and brand managers chose it because it says everything and says nothing. It’s what I’m here to do, it’s what message boarding is, it’s the game inside the game. I’m here to discuss Sport (Seriously Posting Only Rad Thoughts).
  12. It is a real drag. It's becoming increasingly clear who Bill Simmons really is - He's venal, opportunistic, lazy, sheltered, and a crybaby. Woefully unprepared and ill-equipped, talent wise, to host the show(s) he has. He's the worst writer on his own staff, and one of the worst podcasters on his own staff. He's also kind of a bad gauge of talent - I tried to listen to The Ringer MLB show and it's dreadful. Binge Mode is unlistenable and embarrassing when compared to other pods that discuss the same subjects. A while back they had Klosterman on the Reality Bites rewatchable and he Chris Ryan were talking about how selling out is not a concern anymore, how a younger ringer staffer asked them about it and how they started to explain why people cared about selling out, but then realized he was actually asking them to explain the very definition of selling out. Bill was sitting right there. He's Darren Rovell if Darren Rovell had lucked into a cash cow he could squeeze to death.
  13. That's the problem is it's not a handle or an alias. It's my actual name. I need an alias. I think you guys will adjust and get used to it fairly quickly.
  14. I've been waiting for this for years. Trying to get something that's a little more anonymous instead of my actual surname, which I regretted like six minutes after choosing it. The problem is coming up with a non-lame handle that isn't something stupid like RedsDood11. I have a team of writers working 15 hours days on this right now.
  15. Again, can't wrap my brain around it. This is like the blueblack/whitegold dress. My eyes simply do not see it that way.
  16. Is it really “better-looking” or do you have better associations with the brighter green? I don’t care if they’ve lost every game wearing the dark green and won every game wearing the bright green - the dark green just looks better to me.
  17. Yeah. Cannot grasp any of that. I don't care if it's the same color that Reggie Jackson wore - I look at it with my eyeballs and it looks worse!
  18. Normally I can understand where posters are coming from on a topic even if I don't agree, but the A's kelly green - I hate the A's in kelly green and I'm baffled by the love for it. Completely flummoxed. The forrest green the A's use, which has a little blue in it so it skews towards a dark teal, is such a pretty color and contrasts so much better off their bright yellow than the kelly green does. It's why their home hats get my vote for best hat in major league baseball. The kelly green jerseys and hats look like the regular unis got left out in the sun too long. They look like a dollar store knockoff that only had 8 stock colors tshirts to choose from and that was the closest they could get to the A's.
  19. Nobody will ever take that tournament seriously if it's only held whenever they feel like it. 1996, 2004, 2016 what is that? And 2016 was a GD joke with the U23 North American team who, yes, were very fun and made the Greg Wyshinskis of the world rock hard, but it cannibalized the national team for USA so you had a lot of fans in the states lose interest when our hamstrung team went 3 and out. The whole thing was stupid. Either participate in the Olympics or hold an international tournament on a regular schedule. The World Baseball Classic is also stupid, but at least they've managed to hold it every 4 years.
  20. Can't say I'm wowed by any of these, but I am shaking my head at a few of them. The Vipers are one of the ugliest sports uniforms I've ever seen, and Houston's look like someone's bad Patriots concept from the concept boards. I can't believe we're in 2020 and football uniforms are still being designed with intricate side panels that require precise tucking in to line up with no consideration for how they'll look when jerseys and pants combinations are mixed around. The closest thing that made me go "that's cool" was the Guardians and St Louis' helmets.
  21. https://www.theplayerstribune.com/en-us/articles/jamie-benn-stars-stanley-cup-playoff It's pretty bad. Definitely reads like it was written by someone who stopped going to school at 16.
  22. Mine is lame because it's a first round win, but when the Blue Jackets won Game 4 and swept the Lightning last year it ended a personal playoff losing streak shared between my 3 favorite teams that extended to the 1995 NLDS. 16 straight losses. It was starting to get to the point where I didn't know if it was possible for these teams to beat anyone in the playoffs. Finally got to see one of my teams end someone else's season and know what it feels like to advance to a second round. Most importantly it ended 19 years of being the league's doormat expansion franchise. It was the best feeling to see them get over the hump for the first time. I doubt any future playoff series wins short of a stanley cup victory will ever bring that same high.
  23. I listened to some local sports talk on my drive home last night and I've no idea how people do this every day. It's like 6 to 10 minute blocks of nothing but ads periodically interrupted by some sports talk and if the host interviews someone they have to repeat to the listeners who they're talking to before every question - I used to listen to a Bengals podcast hosted by one of the Cincinnati radio hosts and he carried this habit over to the podcast. I stopped listening because of this. Dude, we downloaded the episode, the guy's name is in the description. We know who you are and we know you're talking to. You don't have to keep saying it. Also, it's a podcast, you have unlimited time. Have an actual conversation. Don't even get me started on taking calls from listeners. I change the station so hard I break the preset buttons whenever Gary from Monroe calls in. Fastest way to lose me as a radio listener. I don't know how these shows even exist anymore when the podcast format is so much better. I refuse to listen to this podcast on principle. Write it down in a book, you lazy hack.
  24. Oh you mean obviously ghost-written articles that were far more expensive to produce than content created by non-famous writers and bloggers didn't work? Who could've known?
