colortv
The Phoenix metro is now the 12th largest in the country(meaning they represent a market larger than all but 11 teams in the NFL) and the city of Phoenix itself is now the 5th most populous. Generally teams seemed to be named after states where the largest metropolis isn't all that big. I don't have a strong opinion on this one way or the other seeing as the Boston team is called New England, just thought I'd pose it.

The same goes with the Patriots in that they don't play in Boston. The regional names are more appropriate. "I always wanted to be somebody, but now I realize I should have been more specific." The_Admiral
Yes. State names are dumb, especially when other teams in the metropolitan area don't use the name of the state. "New England Patriots" is the dumbest one of all. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

The_Admiral
I'm reminded of how people wanted the new Jets to be called the "Manitoba Falcons" as if there were some need to appeal to the entire province of Manitoba, a big empty box where like 75% of the population is in or around One Great City. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
joey joe joe jr. shabadoo
New England Patriots isn't a dumb name. There's nothing wrong with trying to reach out and identify with an entire region (one that has its own customs, history, feel to it) Not everyone will agree with me but to me you don't absolutely have to play within the city limits of a city to claim you represent it. The Jets and Giants still get some grief over this.

It almost sounds like a minor league baseball team, but it is easier than saying "Massachusetts Patriots" or "Foxborough Patriots". I do hope one day they revert back to Boston Patriots. As far as the Cardinals, keep it as Arizona. "The Seattle Seahawks take on the Phoenix Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona." Sounds a bit college-y. The Six
Playing for a state is no better or worse than playing for a city. It's all arbitrary. The team just chooses a region that they think is best for their branding. There is nothing sacred or correct about CITY NAME SPORTS TEAM.
Dynasty
State names have always sounded weird to me, mainly because you have a large amount teams with their city names and only a small few that are trying to represent their state or region. They just stand out too much from the majority.
AnPheitseog
City Nickname is the general convention, and one that should be followed in most cases in North America. That said? Arizona Cardinals is better than Phoenix. Just like how it sounds better. Formerly known as DiePerske

Sacred, no, but it's just become the convention in North America that sports teams represent the cities they're in (as opposed to, say, English soccer, where there's a slew of teams in London alone associated with neighborhoods or communities), so it sounds silly for one team to purport to represent six entire states. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

It's not better, it's just familiar. And if it is the right way then they should be the Glendale Cardinals. Any time I see one of those NFL fandom maps the Patriots always completely cover New England...so it appears that they actually do represent six states. It's not silly if it's true. colortv
I don't really have a problem with the Patriots calling themselves New England when most of those states are geographically very small and culturally similar.

It's often states that have one dominant metro area like Minnesota, Arizona, and Colorado. I'm surprised the Thunder are not simply "Oklahoma" since it's not like Tulsa is going to be getting an NBA team (and that would improve their road jersey). That said, I prefer city names (even though my teams started the whole thing) Golden State bugs me the most. radchad
Personally (and I don't have any justification for it), I just think "Arizona Cardinals" sounds better than "Phoenix Cardinals." I've always said they could've solved all of their problems by originally naming the team the Phoenix Snakes or something similar. I get that the Arizona Diamondback rattlesnake is a thing, but its still SO clunky. They looked Cheesy when they first came out by putting Diamond over the word Backs, but they've made it SO much worse with this D Backs nonsense. I don't care how long and arduous it is to say the full name Arizona Diamondbacks or Even just Diamondbacks. It's a MILLION times better than D Backs.
