Which NFL coaches are next to go?

I was thinking this year was a relatiovely light year for head coaching changes in the NFL, and it got me thinking which coaches are 1 bad year away from looking for a new job. here are my picks.

1 Jim Haslett- done nothing much in New Orleans really, and been there a long time, fresh ideas may be needed very soon.

2 Mike Shanahan- may not be fired but may choose to leave for new pastures if he can't get the Broncos back and firing quickly.

3 Dick Vermeil- again, not a iring candidate really, but doesn't have the record of a long-hauler, so may resign/retire.

4 Bill Parcells- a third possible resignation if the Cowboys don't challenge.

5 Mike Sherman- not done much even with Favre as QB, maybe time to look for a new direction for the Packers franchise as a whole.

6Mike Martz - How has this guy lasted so long? When he took over he had a superbowl champion team, a slow decline suggests the improvements need to come fast.

I was thinkinng about Holmgren, but the Seahawks have done ok recently, so I reckon he may have a couple of years to move this along there. But certainly if things are rocking in Seattle by the end of 2006 expect a new head coach there to.

I was thinking joe Gibbs as well, but I think the owner in Washington is tryng to lose his trigger happy reputation so may do everything and anything to keep Gibbs for a while.

If you consider 9-7 while losing to the Rams 3 times in a row and no playoff wins in however many years good, then ok. I just can't see him staying at all especially with all the turmoil in the front office right now. No president, no head of college scouting, numerous other spots open. If there aren't double digits in the "W" column, even with all this, he can post his home on the Century21 website.

i agree with you saintsfan. i wonder about herm edwards though.

Edwards was another guy I considered but weren't the Jets in the playoffs this year? If I remembered that wrong, then yeah he could be under threat, and certainly missing out on the playoffs would put him under pressure. Another long term possible casualty for 2006.

the thing wiht Herm is that even though they got to the playoffs they have gone no where. Both coordinaters have been run out and blamed for problems if the Jets don't get deep in the playoffs this year I would think Herm is done. He's a good motivator, but a terrible in-game coach especially when it comes to the clock. The Jets want more from him, they were a playoff calibur team before him. The previous coach quit because of late slide that cost them a trip to the playoffs. Edwards pretty much took over the Parcells' Jets teams, which one of those included an AFC championship trip.

If I recall, they said that they were going to give Joe Gibbs a lot of time to get the Redskins on top..it's only been one season..

Same thing for Bill "I've coached every team except the Falcons" Parcells.

Personally as Packers fan Im starting to get fed up with Sherman. His playcalling ability however was impressive during the season. He sucked major ass as GM, so brining in Ted Thompson was very good. But Mike hasnt been able to go far, and our team is very underacheiving especially on the D side. If we dont do well this year, Im expecting Mike to be gone, and our new Dcoordinator Jim Bates to be in.

Coaches in Trouble

Herm Edwards-Jets, Gone are his Defensive Coordinator and Offensive Coordinator if the Jets sputter next year he may be next.

Jeff Fischer-Titans, Has been there 10 years now back to the days in Houston, last year the Titans struggled and finished last another year like taht and the Titans will have a second coach.

Dom Capers-Texans, I think the Texans need to be in playoff conetion otherwise Capers may be looking for work.

Dick Vermeil-Cheifs, If Chiefs dont get into playoffs again next year Vermeil will be gone.

Mike Shanahan-Broncos, The Press began to turn the heat up on Shanny who has not won a playoff game since Elway retired if Broncos dont wina playoff game next year or miss the playoffs the 2 Lombardi Trophies may no longer be enough to keep his job.

Norv Turner-Raiders, If teh Riaders struggle again Turner will be in trouble because Al Davis always blames the coach first, and is quick to pull the trigger.

Bill Parcells-Cowboys, One bad year could be jsut a bump in the road but a second bad year could bring a feud between Bill & Jerry and that would lead to Parcells either quitting or being canned, though he would likely be the first to walk.

Mike Sherman-Packers, The Packers are at a cross roads if Favre retires teh rebuilding will need to begin, and taht coudl be with a new coach, if Favre returns and the Packers fall Sherman could be chosen the scapegoat. Though he may not be fired Sherman is quickly entering a no-win situation.

Mike Tice-Vikings, Moss will likely be gone and the Vikings who struggled down the strecth teh last two years will be tested from the start of the season, if Tice cant prove the Vikings are better then 8-8 he will likely be the next out the door.

Jim Haslett-Saints, Survived teh axe this year with a 4-game winning streak at season's end, next year he wont be as lucky he is a lame duck coach on a lame duck team as the rumors of the Saints move to LA heat up, with the Saints continuing to play mediocre football.

Mike Martz-Rams, One more bad year and even Georgi Fronbiere will see he is a horrible coach, look for Rams fans to get their wish one way or the another a Suepr Bowl contender or a new coach.

Mike Holmgren-Seahawks, If the Seahwks dont win a playoff gamne next year Hokmgren will be gone. They were supposed to contend for the NFC Title this year instead they barely won an awful division then lost a home playoff game to an 8-8 team. Holmgren has reached the end of the road, and will not be afforded another year after next if results are not shown.

I think Capers and Fisher should be safe for now. capers has done a good jopb with his expansion outfit. And fisher took over an awful franchise and turned them around and made them contenders. He may leave for a new challenge but I doubt he would be fired.

Turner is gonna be under pressure as he is at the Raiders, because of the Davis factor. Give him another year at least.

As for Gruden, he won the Superbowl and the Buccs moved so much to get him, they won't be firing him for a while at least.

Tank, you're right on all but the following.

Herm Edwards - Remember, if his kicker has an ounce of 'clutch' in him, the Jets would've gone to the AFC Championship game. Not to mention the fact that Chad Pennington was playing with a torn rotator cuff, and because of that, wasn't as effective as he could be.

Jeff Fisher - Shouldn't be fired. His team suffered a lot of injuries this season. And some of them were pretty big like -- well, last years co-MVP at QB. On top of that, there's something to be said about the fact that he went for onside kicks early against Indianapolis. This guy still wanted to win, and do what it takes to win, even though his team was well out of it. In todays NFL, I don't think one bad year is enough to put somebody on the hot seat.

Mike Shanahan - I've learned that the press is a bunch of idiots out here in Colorado and they don't really have a clue, especially in my hometown. Mike Shanahan's job has job security because Pat Bowlen thinks he's among the best coaches in the NFL, and him and Mike Shanahan are very close. I can't see Pat Bowlen ever firing Mike Shanahan, as long as the team is consistent. This team is always in playoff contention, and if not for a few things that weren't even Shanahan's fault (fumble against the Jags blocked FG against the Raiders, etc.), this team would've been playing their opening playoff game in Denver.

Might want to add Jon Gruden to that list too. I know he won the Super Bowl for the Buc's but he hasn't done anything since then.

gotta agree with you there, unfortunately

Holmgren has to be on that list too. People are waiting for success and the waiting is getting old. The only problem...who do you get to replace him?

The Seahawks should have fired Holmgren after this season - hell, they should have canned him mid-way through the year. The fraud has accomplished next to nothing in his six seasons in Seattle. The team he inherited was an inconsistent mediocrity; the current team is an underachieving inconsistent mediocrity. Frankly, the only reason that Holmgren has survived as long as he has in Seattle is because he's been living off of his reputation with the Packers. Personally, I think that he gets too much credit for what transpired under his leadership in Green Bay. GM Ron Wolf was the key to the Packers' success.

After firing Holmgren, the Seattle should have hired former Patriots' Defensive Coordinator Romeo Crennel as Head Coach (which would also prove useful when handing Ray Rhodes his walking papers) and Pats' VP of Player Personnel Scott Pioli as President of football Operations. In fact, had the 'Hawks hired Crennel, they probably would have had a better shot at luring Pioli from New England, since the two are reportedly very close.

Instead, Paul Allen has stood around with his thumb planted firmly in his keister since the Seahawks' early exit from the playoffs. Bottom line? Seattle is in a world of trouble this off-season (signing free agents, preparing for the draft, etc.) because there is nobody around to take charge of the football operations. I can see it now: another rebuilding project for the Seahawks.
