The ECHL

Pensacola "We won the Brabham Cup then went on to be the 3rd worst team the next season" Ice Pilots, Nuckas!

They deliberated on this subject for months and even entertained sponsership deals (Nationwide Hockey League, Nationwide Insurance) but decided that since they had been know as the ECHL for almost fifteen years and made a name for themselves, they would drop that actual name and go with just ECHL.

How about the Louisiana "9 winning seasons before tanking and folding the next season" IceGators

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

The IceGators folded? Wow, they used to get massive crowds when I was living on the Coast and followed the Sea Wolves a lot.

Yep, because (1) the people around here are so friggin' bandwagon-happy, that when the newness of hockey wore off, attendance fell like a rock. (2) Ownership changed hands a lot in the final 4 seasons. I never was a big fan of the IceGators (more an IcePilots fan than anything else), but I always made sure I went from 5-10 games a season to show my support for hockey in Acadiana.

There's been rumours around here to try and bring the team back, especially now that refugees from Katrina are long gone from the Cajundome and the associated refurbishment of the facilities because of the wear and tear. Not sure if anything will come out of it, but it would be nice to have a hockey team closer to me than Beaumont, Shreveport, or Biloxi...

BTW, I was at the first home game against Mobile. It was a circus that evening. I think I was only a handfull of the 12,000 who knew what was actually going on on the ice. ^_^
