Penguins Get Arena Deal Done

Alright. Our government screwed up. Like thats anything new.

The point is don't blame Mario for your government's incompetence.

I get it.

and after looking on what our local government has done the past few years I shouldnt be surprized at all this is happening. But If the pens move, it will be THE biggest screwup theyve had.

All though I know next to nothing about Pittsburgh municipal politics, I would have to agree. All they need to do is match KC's offer (or come up with something else just as sweet) and the team stays. If the mayor and everyone else involved on Pittsburgh's end of things can't figure that out, well it's game over.

The city, county and state is run by morons and crooks that is why the Pens will move.

To be fair to Ez Street, he's by far the most reasonable KC poster on the pittsburghpenguins.com forum.

Thanks, Andy.

I actually stopped posting because of the negativity. I respect the Penguins fans and don't feel it is nessicary to comment on thier situation any further.

A lot of so-called KC fans have been tremendously rude on there. Which is making things worse.

Letsgopens.com has banned anyone having anything to do with KC. I never registered there.

My feeling is the deal will still get done in Pittsburgh. But all the reports out of there are truely unreliable.

Always some source telling them something. Nothing has been accurate to this point.

I'd trust Bob McKenzie over Pierre McGuire though.

I feel for you guys. i'd wish you'd get the Panthers or some other middling franchise, just not the Pens. The NHL without the Pittsburgh market would be a sad sight.

Many sports talking heads in Pittsburgh are saying the deal is done. Of course, that doesn't amount to anything, but sentiment seems to be that they are staying.

Yeah but alot of those talking heads said that Russ Grimm was the next Steelers coach and we all saw what happened there.

This morning the "hot" rumors were that the deal is "done" for them to stay and that Tulsa has entered the bidding war...which probably means that there is no deal and Seattle is looking at them.

If the Pens get all of the parking revenue from all Arena events and daytime parking they will stay, the Arena parking lot is a gold mine since alot of people who work downtown use it during the day and that revenue stream will bring in more money than anything in KC or Tulsa(the NHL will never allow them to move there).

The words "Russ Grimm" and "Head Coach" together in a sentence always make me giggle.

Gov. Ed Rendell said today that state and local officials have revised their offer to the Penguins on a new arena but are not close to a deal to keep the team in Pittsburgh.

Mr. Rendell disputed a published report saying that a new arena deal could be announced today or tomorrow.

"The statements that this is close to a done deal -- that is not correct," he said. "We have given the Penguins a revised offer but in no way shape or form have they indicated it's over."

Why do I get the feeling that if a deal doesn't get done, Rendell's gonna have to steer clear of Western Pennsylvania for the remainder of his term?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, still not buying it yet. But this is interesting.

Penguins declare impasse in arena talks

Will pursue other offers aggressively, letter says

Monday, March 05, 2007

By Mark Belko, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Penguins have declared an impasse in negotiations with government officials over construction of a new arena and will aggressively explore relocating the team to a new city.

Penguins co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle notified Gov. Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl about their decision in a letter today.

The team is declaring an impasse even though it has agreed to pay $3.6 million a year in rent, plus another $400,000 a year in capital expenses, for an annual contribution of $4 million, for a new arena.

They also have agreed to pay $500,000 for a parking garage to be built as part of the arena complex.

Despite that, the parties have been unable to reach an agreement.

"Unfortunately, we still don't have a deal and are faced with mounting uncertainty that an agreement can be reached in a time frame that is realistic for our organization," the letter states. "Therefore, we have no choice but to declare an impasse and to notify NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman that we will aggressively explore relocation."

The team owners also said in the letter that Friday's appeals on the Pittsburgh slots license "cause us great concern." Don Barden, the winning casino bidder, has pledged $7.5 million a year from slots proceeds toward an arena. But with appeals filed against the award, construction of the casino could be delayed and it is not clear when arena payments could begin.

"A project of this scope, with so many complex issues, can ill afford further delays that add more risk and more uncertainty," the letter continues. "The risk has been magnified by what we perceive as a lack of collaboration from the public sector in the negotiations."

One of the last straws came Friday when public officials refused to share interest rate information with the team regarding the state's financial assumptions, according to sources close to the Penguins.

The Penguins have increased their contribution from $2.86 million per year, which was part of the original offer that was presented by state and local leaders at a meeting Jan. 4.

The team now is expected to be more aggressive in bargaining with Kansas City, which has a nearly finished new arena but no hockey team.

The declaration of an impasse doesn't mean the Penguins have definitely decided to leave, but at this point there is no indication they intend to talk any more with local officials.

The team said it had already extended its original deadline of early February because it was interested in staying in Pittsburgh.

"Our good faith efforts have not produced a deal, however, and have only added more anxiety to what we thought at best was a risky proposition for us moving forward."

They where done the day the slot license cartel spit in the face of Western PA and didnt give Isle of Capri the slot license(besides the arena it was the best deal and location for the region). Ed Rendell and Dan Onorato could care less about the Pens or a new arena they want a useless tunnel under the river to the Northside and Pittsburgh's young mayor is in way over his head. I just hope the NHL lets the Penguins name and history stay in Pittsburgh even if they never get another team.

This latest news is really disheartening. Within 5 years, I guess we'll know how the nord and jet fans felt when their teams raised the cup in another city. PA sucks ass with politicians. Just live in this dump for a while (let alone your whole life) and you'll soon agree. I wouldn't doubt they are taking a bribe to let them leave.
