Man, that sucks.

Smells like an undiscovered heart defect to me at first glance.

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

From the Denver Post:

Indianapolis - Tragedy struck the Broncos for the second time in less than two months Saturday when backup running back Damien Nash collapsed and died after a charity basketball game in St. Louis, his agent, David Canter, said Saturday night.

Nash was 24. Cause of death was not immediately known.

Signed as a free agent in August, Nash played in three games for the Broncos last season and finished with 18 carries for 66 yards. He started as a rookie in 2005 with Tennessee, which drafted him in the fifth round. He played in three games for the Titans.

Nash was from East St. Louis, Ill. He played two seasons at Missouri after starting at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College.

Cornerback Darrent Williams, 24, was shot and killed Jan. 1 while riding in a limousine after leaving a nightclub in Denver, just hours after the Broncos' season ended. Police have not made any arrests in that case.

Nash was hosting the basketball game at Riverview Gardens High School to benefit the Darris Nash Find a Heart Foundation, a charity that raises funds for heart transplant research. Damien Nash recently founded the charity in honor of his older brother, Darris, who has had a heart transplant.

Nash went to Riverview Gardens High for three years before transferring his senior season to East St. Louis (Ill.) High.

Its really shocking when something like this happens because you think athletes are in great shape but sometimes the heart has within it a ticking time bomb, and despite all of our best medicine its very hard to find it.

I guess it demonstrates how important it is to see a Doctor with regularity.

You certainly don't want him to have to run out of the room during the appointment.

Yeah good one dude. Great place for it too. <_<

Definately been a rough season for Denver. Prayers go out to his family and friends.

Horrible, horrible loss for Nash, his family, and the Denver Broncos.

One has to wonder if there were any artificial substances that could've been the cause of the heart attack though.

Could be, I think when you're talking about losing professional athletes at a young age with heart problems it's always a possibility.

The charity event was for a foundation he created for his brother, who required a heart transplant at some point in his life, so, and I'm certainly not a doctor and won't claim to be one, my initial reaction is that it's a genetic problem that perhaps got overlooked.

Guys, as someone who knows heart attacks all too well, trust me - there is no age at which someone is "safe" from heart trouble.

Remember, not all that long ago in terms of human history, the life expectancy of a human being was in the mid-30's rather than the 70's. We're not that far removed from that time, despite medical advances, better eating and exercise habits, and so forth.

If you have any weird stuff happening: chest pain no matter how momentary, dizziness with any regularity, unexplainable pains in either arm, etc., get yourself checked out by a cardiologist. It's far better to know there's a problem (such as my narrower-than-normal coronary arteries, for example) than to find out the hard way, as I did.

I read a Denver Post article on this and one thing stood out for me:

Denver strength and conditioning coach Rich Tuten said he received a call from receiver Brandon Marshall, who was with Nash at the charity event. Marshall also was at the Denver nightclub with Williams shortly before he was killed.

I saw, I came, I left.

Oh, stick it, bucfan. It's just a goddamn message board. Of course I feel bad for the guy's family, we all do, I think it's generally understood. Sorry I didn't go into the Serious Wrestling Announcer Voice for this thread.

I'm going to refrain from pulling a Bill Frist (trying to play doctor from thousands of miles away and diagnosing a condition outside my medical subspecialty), but my first thought was congenital heart defect [most likely: HOCM - hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy]. When you figure that 1) he was a young male athlete, 2) he had just finished up performing a physical activity, and 3) there is clearly a history of heart disease in his family as evidenced by his brother's issues, that weighs fairly heavily in favor of his sudden and untimely death occurring from natural causes, rather than drugs. The time course wouldn't see to fit for him to have ingested something, unless it was well before the game, and it would have likely affected him sooner, certainly in time to affect his game.

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.
