Utah Jazz Uniform Question

Ok....this might be the strangest of topics. But, I feel it fitting for this site.

I am trying to figure out a timeline of the Utah Jazz early vintage uniforms. The New Orleans Jersey, the slight revision, the Green Jersey, the Full Logo jersey, and when they were worn. This is what I figured out so far. I would love any help or clarification if you can offer it.

1979-80 New Orleans Jersey-"No revisions from previous years uniforms"

Home-Partial Jazz Logo with no "UTAH"

Road-Purple, Partial Jazz Logo with no "UTAH" with "JAZZ" logo and numbers in solid block white.

1980-82 Updated Revision-"More depth to Road Uniform"

Home-Partial Jazz Logo with no "UTAH"

Road-Purple, Partial Jazz Logo with no "UTAH" with gold "JAZZ" Logo and numbers in white outline.

1982-84 Green Era-"Green Road Uniforms"

Home-Partial Jazz Logo with no "UTAH"

Road-Green, Partial Jazz Logo with no "UTAH with solid gold "JAZZ" Logo and numbers.

This is where its gets shady....

1984-86? Full Logo Era-Part I

Home-Partial Jazz Logo with no "UTAH"

Road-Purple with Full Logo with solid gold Jazz Logo and numbers

SECONDARY???-Green Jersey

====================================================================

With the Green Jersey, I have seen footage of Karl Malone and John Stockton wearing the green jersey. Even though they wore the Green Jerseys from 82-84. I'm wondering if they wore them in Pre-Season or as a Third Jersey??!

I have also seen Malone and Stockton wear the Partial Jazz Logo with no "UTAH" in footage as well.

If anyone could give any light on this, I would love it.

====================================================================

1986-90 Full Logo Era-Part II

Home-Partial Jazz Logo with "UTAH"

Road-Purple with Full Logo with solid gold Jazz Logo and numbers

1990-91 Full Logo Era-Part III

Home-Partial Jazz Logo with "UTAH"

Road-Purple with Full Logo with solid gold Jazz Logo and numbers

(NOTE-I have noticed that from this year all of the numbers on the jersey are thinner and the number twos are slanted instead of blocked....any insight???)

1991-96 Full Logo Era-Part IV

Home-Partial Jazz Logo "UTAH"

Road-Purple with Full Logo with solid gold Jazz Logo and numbers

I think I have too much time on my hands...but I'm at work and what else am I going to do?

Impresive work thus far, but I can't lend much insight, unfortunately. The hand-me-down iteration of the Utah Jazz (i.e. before the Wasatch-themed overhaul in '96) seemed like the kind of team that didn't really pay much attention to sartorial detail. I mean, the shorts and jersesy didn't even match.

Never forget.

Just in general.

Interesting. Don't know how much I can help with some of the details, but you've got my curiosity piqued in regards to the Green roads.

I saw those unis live (vs. the Mavericks back in the early '80s). Since I was a fan of the Mardi Gras colors, eliminating all of the Purple from the road uniforms seemed strange to me. I wish I had pictures, but they also used some sort of alternate logo on the backs of the warmup jackets that had a mountain range of sorts. Never really saw that logo in print anywhere though.

The other curiosity for me was in the primary logo. Specifically, with the "UTAH" wordmark. More often than not it was Black, but occasionally it was Green:

heh, the way I remember it the whites eventually did have the little UTAH over Jazz...ya just get used to writin down "partial logo with no Utah"?

this green jersey thing's bothered me as well, pantone. seems kinda funny, the home whites at the time used very little green while the road greens had zero purple.

I've been able to Google some of the uniforms I was mentioning.

Adrian Dantley New Orleans Jersey (79-80)

Notice the Stripes...Gold, Green, Gold and that the letters and numbers are white

DantleyJazz.jpg

Adrian Dantley Green Jersey (82-84)

Gold numbers and no purple.

jazz844.jpg

Mark Eaton Purple Road Jersey (91-96)

Piping has white stripe included.

EatonJazz.jpg

Adrian Dantley Home Whites (1979-84?,85?)

These jerseys basically stayed the same.

2124713.jpg

Karl Malone Home Whites (1990-91?)

Sorry its small....notice the slanted two? The numbers are also very thin.

Again...it's small....but this one has the "UTAH" on the logo in purple.

(Images cut because my computer said I had to for some reason)

Those "slanted 2" Utah jerseys I do remember, but I can't recall which year. I think they may have been worn only for the first part of the season and then replaced (home and road) with uniforms with the broader numbers and "straight across 2." The main reason I remember those "slanted 2" unis is because I didn't like (hell, hated the thinness of the numbers).

Yah, I have a version that I changed to purple. But the original is black. As well with the NEW ORLEANS JAZZ, the New Orleans is black.

Bottom line: sometimes it was Purple, sometimes it was Black, and on rare occasions Green.

haha for sure. Yah, I have been looking for more accurate and precise pictures. Looks like New Orleans never used the logo with New Orleans on it.

The best Utah jerseys, at the time, were the Malone, Stocktons with the mountains. Now they look just cheesy. I have looked everywhere for good pics, managed to make these, but I am still looking for the guides to make it better:

Nice Nice. But They started out in Utah in 1979. New Orleans from '75-'79. I don't know if they had "Utah" in the font when they were first in Utah. When in New Orleans was the All purple with the white logo and white numbers. No "New Orleans" in the font on the Jersey. thinking about it now. the Jazz should try out a green jersey. Maybe bring the gold back into the mix to, and maybe bit of white and the light blue? Hey...its an idea.

I didn't know that Stockton or Malone ever wore the green jerseys...

I remember seeing highlights of Darrell Griffith in the slam dunk contest wearing green and having no idea what team that was...

81-85 was kind of like a dark age of uniform history to me because there were no basketball cards (except for "Star" which I never saw in real life)

yeah, I don't think they ever wore those green duds either... and if they did, pics would be much appreciated, that would be interesting.

heh, I still kick myself a little when I recall last year at Rogan's Shoes' tent sale, I coulda bought a blank of the "mountain" home jersey for $10...heh, the trim alone woulda been enough for me to tell what team it was, but this baby wasn't completely blank...aw naw, hell naw, the mountains were on it, where they were supposed to be, waiting for Jazz and some numbers to be put on. Heh, depending on how you see it, a counterfeiter's heaven, a DIY baller's jackpot (my thoughts) or wow, cheap jerseys with nothin on em. Ended up grabbing a Pacers pinstriped home and a Magic pinstriped blue, the latter of which don't fit and is for sale. admittedly, I didn't look at the jocktag, there were too many damn choices :D Warriors City, Syracuse Nationals, Bucks home, Celtics, Kings, IIRC Sonics...heh, can't wait for this year's tent sale.

Here are some more pictures and observations....

Here's a link to Jazz Uniform history according to NBA.com. Before the switch to Blue.

Going Retro: Utah Jazz

Adrian Dantley in Green Jerseys.

jazz_dantley_240.jpg

I remember back in 2003 when the Jazz made a Stockton Tribute video there was raw footage of Malone playing at home in the green jersey. Probably around 85 or so in his rookie season. If my memory serves me they were playing Detroit at home with the Pistons in Blue.

Also, back in 1995 when teams were adding third jerseys, there was talk about the Jazz wearing a Green Alternate. My belief is that this never happened because of the change in 1996 to the Purple and Copper logo taking place. Could you imagine?!
