Phil
With the playoffs on, that tournament doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Those guys played their hearts out after having played a full NHL season, and did it for more or less free. Way to go, boys.Local boy Jonathan Toews also became the first Canadian ever to win the World Junior Championship and World Championship in the same season. Gordie
So Canada is now the #1 team in the world, yes?Ranked second under the IIHF's point system - I think Sweden is first, due mostly to their Olympic and WC wins last year, and Finland is third.Canada does hold four of the five major titles now, the exception being the Men's Olympic Championship. Can't wait to see Toews in the NHL. WJMorris3
In other words, the only reason Sweden is #1 is because Canada and not Finland won the gold?
Gordie
In other words, the only reason Sweden is #1 is because Canada and not Finland won the gold? No, Canada was only 10 points behind Finland going in, so that didn't make a difference.Sweden finished fourth at the tournament, gaining enough points to stay ranked number one. Canada and Finland closed the gap some, but to overtake Sweden, the Swedes would have had to have finished lower at the tournament.Czech Republic was second. Dropped down to fourth though now. Sucks for them.U.S. is still below Slovakia even though we beat them. The U.S. only finished one spot ahead of Slovakia though, not enough of a difference to overtake them in the rankings. The ranking system is explained here, for those that want more info:http://www.iihf.com/hockey/worldranking/worldranking.htm
