I didn't realize until a few minutes ago that the team that wins the championship is given the floor to do with as it pleases. Also, I had always wondered why that at the 1978 Final Four played at the Checkerdome in St. Louis, that the floor was the same one that Indiana used at Assembly Hall in Bloomington. Well, here's the explanation:

Since 1986, the winning team is traditionally given the floor from thechampionship venue to keep. What the school does with it varies: someschools sell pieces of it to fans, others simply put it in storage, andstill others use it in their venues, such as Michigan State did in 2002and Florida did in 2006, re-painting the hardwood and placing it intheir home arena. The only exception to this was in 1978: for thatyear's Final Four, the NCAA had to truck in Indiana's court fromAssembly Hall to the Checkerdome in St. Louis, as the basketball floorat that hockey arena had been warped as a result of water damage.
