We don't exactly have Cal fans here.

There were looking at many options, ATT Park, Oakland Coliseum and even Candlestick.

"Overall, AT&T offers us the best facility to meet the needs of our football program, students and fans," athletic director Sandy Barbour said Monday in a news conference on the field at the park. "AT&T provides a perfect bridge for Cal football to the 2012 season, when we return to Memorial Stadium. It provides easy access for our East Bay fans. It has a staff used to hosting college football."

If there is a conflict with the MLB playoffs, they will probably elect Oakland Coliseum before Candlestick since it BART friendly. Candlestick is a pain to get to, period.

yeah I dont associate Cal and San Fran, I would have expected Stanford to this before Cal.

Cal doesn't exactly have a choice. They need to completely rebuild their stadium, which is inconveniently located directly over a major fault line.

Yeah but I would have thought Oakland would be more natural for them. I mean it may look strange with a full stadium in Oakland but I think it would fun.

Correct, the tree sitters were taken down about a year ago and the finding for the project is basically in place. Even while over the Hayward Fault, it is really a dump (e.g. holes in the restroom concrete which can see out into the stadium bowl. Plus, if you move to Candlestick, you are essentially moving into Stanford territory.

Speaking of Stanford, yes, they did not have to relocate for the 2006 season because they were decreasing their stadium dramatically and their athletic benefactor, former Stanford basketball player and real estate billionaire John Arrillaga, paid to get it done in 42 weeks.

Only "more natural" in that both Berkeley and Oakland are in Alameda County. ATT has only one tenant while Coliseum has two. The way the AL West seems to be a crapshoot, the A's could still have a post-season in 2011. It would not be fun if the excessive use of the field caused injury. Students and East Bay residents who will go, can easily take BART to the Embarcadero and either walk or spend $2 to take the MUNI trolley directly to the park.

FYI, Stanford held this year's spring practice in San Francisco at Kezar Stadium (what is currently left) in an attempt to get The City more interested in college football.

AT&T hosts the Emerald Bowl (Kraft I'm Hungry Bowl or something like that now) every year and it's a pretty big hit. When Cal played Miami two years ago AT&T Park was absolutely packed full of Cal fans. The Giants crowd is pretty much split between Stanford and Cal (I'd actually say a little bit in favor of Cal) so that makes pretty good sense. I heard a lot of good things from Cal fans about how easy it was to get to AT&T Park and how impressed they were with the facilities when I was there. Overall, AT&T Park is definitely a baseball field, but it's not a bad place to watch football either.

I wonder if Pretty Phone Park could host the 49ers for a couple of years if they build a new stadium at Candlestick Point. Would it be sufficient for the NFL, or would they make them share the Oakland Coliseum?

It might come to that if the Santa Clara vote fails, but I think it will pass and Niners will be playing in the South Bay in 2014.

Cal will take a hit on attendance as ATT seats 45,000 for football compared with 71,000 at Memorial Stadium, but while the school will have to pay rent, the fact that beer could be sold may lessen that expense. But the cost of the endzone seats were was lesser, but Cal has 38,000 season ticket holders and who knows what it will be as Cal moved to PSLs...err a stadium renovation fee too.

Could you attribute this decision in part to the UFL's California Redwoods playing a fall season at the stadium last year, showing that it could be done?

The Redwoods played 2 of their 3 designated home games @ AT&T Park, which is hardly what I can a season. The games were possibly looked at as seperate events on the calendar. A full NCAA schedule is going to be interesting, especially if the Giants have a playoff run.
