Legendary club River Plate was relegated to the Argentine second division for the first time in its 110-year history on Sunday, sparking ugly steet battles between police and fans just outside its Monumental stadium.

15 police injured.

Wasn't this totally expected? Especially since River fans got onto the pitch during the first leg.

I don't know what's more shocking: 2,200 police working security or the fact that they seriously considered playing the game in an empty stadium to avoid this kind of thing from happening.

55 injuried, 1 dead was the last I'd read on the human toll. River Plate's museum was apparently also ransacked after the game. Looks like they should have done more than "seriously consider" playing it in an empty stadium and just done so...
