smzimbabwe
I've been following Liiga (Finnish Hockey) this season and I discovered that the losers of the semifinal games play each other in a third place game, sort of like a bronze medal game in the Olympics. I know the NCAA used to do this in basketball, but are there any other leagues out there that do this?
TorinK92
Not in any major NA sports, and will probably never be that way. It'll end up being too underwhelming for any major sport than happens every year.
johnnysama
^ Well, the NFL, for most of the 1960s (just prior to its merger with the AFL), had something called a Playoff Bowl, which was kinda like what you mentioned, smzimbabwe.
RyanMcD29
Eh, it would actually be kinda cool to bring it back in the Final Four. Have it played that Sunday on one of the Turner stations before the Women's Final Four. It won't be as well played with nothing on the line, but it would still present a good matchup either way.As for current 3rd place games, there's the FIFA World Cup Twitter: @RyanMcD29
HedleyLamarr
About the only professional league that could have a third-place game would be the NFL, since it's a one-and-done postseason format. Maybe MLS, too, since they have a singular championship game.Don't quite see the NBA, NHL, or MLB ever having a third-place game or series. Gothamite
The NFL used to do it, the players and coaches hated it (Lombardi called it the "S-h-i-t Bowl"). Besides, the current postseason format is geared to build to the Super Bowl. Won't happen.EDIT: wait, " :censored:" gets a censored tag? The Green Bay Packers Uniform Database! Now in a handy blog. I'm surprised the pro-bowl hasn't been terminated yet - not just because nobody watches it. The '60s were a different time... in a lot of ways. It won't be as well played with nothing on the line, but it would still present a good matchup either way. This would have been Florida/Wisconsin. And as a Wisconsin fan/graduate, I can tell you I would not have watched it.The WCHA used to have a 3rd place game in its conference tournament...I've been to one. And while winning the 3rd place game is hardly exciting, at least the game counted for rankings purposes...that made it slightly more exciting than having one in the NCAA tourney would be.In this day and age, I just can't imagine North American big leagues having one...as discussed above, three of them play series and one has safety concerns. But the bottom line is that I just don't think North Americans would have very much interest. It draws ratings for some reason, though, so they more or less have to keep it around. The Green Bay Packers Uniform Database! Now in a handy blog.
