The Golden Knights AHL club is in nearby Henderson, and San Joses AHL club is also in San Jose, so unless one of those clubs kills off its AHL affiliate to partner with Meruelos Reno club, that team is gonna be like how Calgary had their affiliate in Canucks territory in Abbotsford from 09-14. The Heat were not well supported because they were not a Canucks affiliate and were affiliated with a rival.

Coachella Valley seems to be doing alright being within a couple hours of Kings/Ducks/Gulls/Reign territory.

Realistically, isn't it a bit saturated with Tahoe starting in 2024 as well?

Yes but the Tahoe team is probably the dumbest idea I’ve ever seen for a pro sports team and it’ll be gone after year one, if not much sooner.

Was the deal to reactivate the Coyotes specific to this one guy?  Or if anyone can get an arena open, could they then purchase the franchise?  If the former, would the NHL officially proclaim the franchise as disbanded, or still let it go to term?

It was specific to Muerelo as part of an agreement he made with the NHL to allow the players and front office go to Utah.

Phoenix guy here, if you listen to sports radio talking about Murello, they basically compare him to a sleazy car salesman. Only in it for himself and for his gambling business. As far as hockey here? We’ll be okay. Let the sport grow organically, we have ASU hockey a Division 1 team, and AIA the governing board for high school sports has hockey for high schools around the central and east valley. It’s growing, and successful.

But the Coyotes did start the popularity of hockey, but the diehards outside of the Coyotes never really cared. With the team never really successful and no advertisement the city never cared.

My understanding is that he had a five-year exclusivity window to relaunch the Coyotes contingent upon a new arena and that he couldn't sell those rights, having already cashed out of the team for a ridiculous $1 billion. However, now that he gave what's left of the franchise back to the NHL, anyone can bid on the rights and get started. So, as usual, everything actually worked out to the benefit of the Phoenix fans here, because now the league isn't tied to that crook anymore and the NHL can, in theory, find someone who actually has the money to own and operate the team. First time for everything.
