NHL Anti-Thread: Bad Business Decision Aggregator

I'm not bullish on the long-term viability of an infinitely sprawling metropolis in a desert that's running out of water. A lot of people may have to go back home and go back to being Wings/Hawks/Flames fans.

so yes I will say the experiment is over and I sincerely hope the next iteration of the Coyotes are supported. But looking at who still has the history and rights to the name we know that won’t happen

My issue is that reviving the Coyotes brand, which was so thoroughly tainted by (read the last 512 pages of this thread), would be a bad idea. Start anew with a decent name and throw in the Coyotes kachina throwbacks later.

He has 5 years from last week to try to reactivate the Coyotes and then if they are re-activated, he cannot sell a majority of the Coyotes for 5 years after the team comes back.  He has a key land auction on June 27th that he has to win.

*June 27th

What if Mereulo doesn't win the bid or what if he doesn't  even show up to the auction?

Would he then own the trademark for a defunct NHL team for the next century or whatever?

Or is there some kind of 10 year window thing going on here?

I don't think it's worth expending braincells on the possibilities, this particular Cleveland Browns situation reeks of "sure grandpa let's get you to bed" more than anything with much actual chance of happening.

That's so weird.  So he keeps a franchise certificate, but can't use it to actually run a franchise (or if he wanted to, the league wouldn't give him players, the union would prohibit anyone from signing with him, and the league wouldn't add them to the schedule.)

But... he technically remains an owner - so what, does he attend owners' meetings?  Does the lineage die in 5 years?  Questions.  I have questions.

So the Coyotes are basically the Malta of the NHL.

The league did this to prevent a lawsuit from him.

Ah, so the arena plans will get up and running properly once he brings on Jerry Falwell Jr. as an investor.

I mean this isnt the first time we've had an inactive NHL franchise. The Quakers, Maroons and Americans were inactive franchises for several years, before the NHL pulled the plug on all of them. I suppose after 5 years if the Coyotes arent back, then either the NHL cancels the franchise, or the league takes over and sells it to someone else..

I'm a little surprised that they didn't give the Jets 2.0 the Jets 1.0 history. Maybe they would in 5 years if the Coyotes don't come back?

Yeah, I have many questions here as well.

I would sooner trust Tommy Tallarico to run an NHL team than Meruelo. So yeah, I doubt he’s gonna be able to do much with his franchise certificate.

I think that this spells the end of franchise continuity in the NHL. Only MLB survives. For now.

What do you want to bet that Joey Kuras or another one of his employees actually composed it? It’s not so far-fetched anymore. Video for those who don’t get the references.

Side note about Tommy: his McMansion (that wasn’t on Cribs) has been listed for sale. The Spider-Man room is still very much there, even though the stagers took out some of the tacky stuff.

It ended already, when the Senators tried to pretend they were connected to the Silver Seven. Speaking of which, I still wish the =O= set was promoted to primary status.

The problem with the Phoenix market that doesn't get mentioned nearly enough... if all the market needed was a great owner to come in on a white horse, you'd think that with the revolving door of owners that the team had and even with the team being sold by the league itself from the clearance rack that somebody with more business acumen than Bob Kazamakis would have put in an offer.  It's not just the market from an infrastructure standpoint.  Nobody wants to buy into it and the only reason Meruelo is still involved at this point is that he needs an anchor for his sports betting grift.

I would say that two teams that exist during different periods in the same league, that use the same nickname, in the same city are certainly "connected". They're just technically not the same franchise.
