Take 5 minutes and watch this.  You really have to feel for the fans, however many there are.  I know it would be a real gut punch to lose any of my teams (and until shovels go in the ground for the Rays, I could be within 4 years of feeling this way).

It's kind of an apples and oranges situation to other fanbases.  This wasn't a Colts Mayflower truck in the middle of the night thing.  This wasn't even a Thrashers situation.  This was the culmination of a multiple-decades long smoldering dumpster fire where if anyone wasn't ultimately expecting this to be the end result they were inhaling the fumes of that final game Wite Out.

I have a buddy from college who has a big job with them and he’s pretty devastated about all this. I kinda feel like he should’ve seen some of this coming, but I went through something similar a few years ago with Republic, so I get the frustration. He summed up the feeling as “:censored:ty and bizarre”, and that’s a pretty good way to put it. It’s like having a tree fall on your house. You can see that it looks pretty precarious, but you’ll probably be able to get it figured out before disaster strikes, right? The neighbors don’t think so, and you don’t have the money to get something that massive moved, hopefully the city will help! It’s technically their tree, right? Then boom, tree falls, house is destroyed, and it’s time to move and start fresh. What a stupid feeling.

I know it was a long and drawn out process, so in some sense it must be nice as a fan to finally know the team is relocating and you don't have that "what if" question lingering over you every season. If what I read is correct, I hope the team are able to get new owners and be able to make an investment that can actually let this team prosper and become their own minor success story of Sun Belt hockey, like the Preds, Bolts and my Sharks.

Rest easy Coyotes. I'll always remember you for 2012 and those delightful kachina jerseys. Please join the league again someday.

Low-key, the Sharks have been an utter trainwreck of a franchise for years and it took a long time for the public to realize that.

Trainwreck? Really? In what ways? I've heard some criticisms of San Jose but "trainwreck" is a whole other level now.

The Sharks have one of the most wealthy owners in the league, but he’s pretty much absentee due to being based in Europe. It’s not so much a money issue as it is them expecting a Bay Area city to foot the bill on an arena for them. They’re basically playing the “That’s a nice hockey team you’ve got there. Would be are shame if they had to move” angle. Too bad that city has already publicly said they would probably be better off financially without the Sharks.

It’s one of those things that’ll probably be solved relatively quickly as long as Sharks ownership isn’t dumb enough to try and pull a bunch of crap, and realize that if they want a new building, they’ll have to pay for it. If they don’t, I could legitimately see the city of San Jose deciding to not work with them at all. A lot of cities in the country, especially Bay Area cities, aren’t going to get exploited by these teams any longer. No matter of it costs them the team or not.

And it's official. NHL approves moving the Coyotes to a nice farm upstate where they can run around with Chivas USA and come back to the league someday, honest, and welcomes its brand new franchise in Utah that will just happen to be stocked with every player and hockey ops staffer from Arizona.

Quote

“I agree with Commissioner Gary Bettman and the National Hockey League, that it is simply unfair to continue to have our Players, coaches, hockey front office, and the NHL teams they compete against, spend several more years playing in an arena that is not suited for NHL hockey,” said Arizona Coyotes Chairman & Governor Alex Meruelo. “But this is not the end for NHL hockey in Arizona. I have negotiated the right to reactivate the team within the next five years, and have retained ownership of the beloved Coyotes name, brand and logo. I remain committed to this community and to building a first-class sports arena and entertainment district without seeking financial support from the public.”

There are far too many examples in American society of people failing upward to the point of immunity from consequence, but this dude ran a hockey team so badly that his fellow owners just paid him a billion dollars to go away forever, with the full knowledge that no one could build a suitable arena in a good location in 25 years, and this twerp sure ain't about to do it in five.

Also apparently the Delta Center only holds 11,000 for hockey, so I wouldn't declare us out of the woods on this just yet.

Okay, that's more tolerable then. Survivable in the short term. Like America West Arena. Oh.

Look, I get that the Winnipeg owners had the advantage of two names, one of which already had a full identity, at the ready. But that sale happened a month later in the calendar than this one and they were still suited up and ready to sell all types of merch by October. This is asinine.

So the wording (according to this article) is that the Coyotes are transferring their players, coaches, and reserves to the new Utah franchise. So it’s an expansion team, and the lineage (at least on paper) of the OG Jets is dead (unless Phoenix gets resurrected, which is unlikely).

Fascinating. Might as well put some long sleeves on these jerseys and call it a day for next season ...

I had a great idea during lunch to post Ryan Smith's logo concept based on his Jazz logo, which would just be the words "HOCKEY TEAM" in black athletic-block letters. Now I can't do that because he already did it. We're not done here, not by a long shot.

EDIT: also, the Whalers moved out of Hartford without an official destination in place (what an indignity), and Karmanos still managed to draw the Flushing Toilet on a napkin somewhere in Michigan in time for the next season.

This trend of non-name names is getting out of hand. It was stupid for Washington and Edmonton but at least it was understandable because they had to drop their old names like they were on fire. Now teams are willing to have a lame-duck year just because the owner doesn't feel like picking something. It really blows my mind how such a stupid trend can even become one in the first place

I have doubts about not having a logo and name until season 2. They want to sell merchandise.

so like what (under a different circumstances however) what Daniel Snyder did in 2020. he could have easily have kept the name they had until they had a new one ready to go like what Dolan did with his team, since he decided he was going to change it but waited until he had one ready to go to change the team name.  fans will have to double dip with buying stuff and way things are now, people don't want to double dip if possible

so long and thanks for all the fish.

I know one way for Utah to get through this "No-Name" phase:

Get a similar font as the "Eagles" on this guy's sweater, use said font to write "Utah" in whatever colors the team is going to wear, and you're good:

That said, I'm not a fan of this Browns/Ravens approach for the Coyotes-to-Utah situation; if not for that, we could've had a season of Utah Coyotes hockey a la the Tennessee Oilers.

Smith said “Utah” will be on the front of the jerseys next season. The team will take its time to determine its name, logos and colors.

“It will 100 percent be ‘Utah,’ and then it will be ‘Utah Something,’ obviously,” he said. “I don’t think given this timeline that we’re going to have time -- or nor should we rush with everything else that’s going on -- to go force what that is in the next three months.”

Smith said the NHL team has contracted with Doubleday & Cartwright, an independent creative studio that has worked on brand identity with pro sports teams and companies like Apple and Nike.

“They’ve done so many of these identities,” he said. “They’re the best on the planet. They’re there to go run that process. I’m not going to rush them. Like, it’s really important that we’re not saying, ‘Hey, this has to be ready by the fall, especially when it’s going to be ‘Utah Something.’

“So, we’ll start with ‘Utah’ on the jersey, and we’ll figure out the logo and everything else and what it is that we are. But that’s a one-way door. You get to do it once. And with this timeline, I think both the League feels better and we feel better to just run the process, and then we’ll drop it when we drop it.”

How long will that take?

“Look, I don’t think it’s a 24-month process,” he said. “It’s a placeholder, but it’s kind of not a placeholder, because we’re going to be ‘Utah’ either way, right? We have the first part of the name. We don’t have the last.”

With an absolute banger of a uniform to boot.

You know, the more I think about it, the more I wonder if this is less of an issue from the Utah ownership and/or the NHL, and more of a case of Fanatics going "You want us to do what in how long of a timeframe? Have you ever ordered, like, anything from us?"

Yeah, this feels like owners covering for the awfulness of Fanatics, especially since next season will be the first under Fanatics.

We’ve exited the Modern Talking phase (Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes) and are now entering the Blue System phase (Utah ____ and their shenanigans). If you get this reference, congrats, you’ve wasted as much time in mediocre synth pop music as I have.
