NHL Anti-Thread: Bad Business Decision Aggregator

I'm late for work because I've been going through threads in the Goldmine looking for the original "frozen blood of non-believers" reference, which I thought was in this thread after dude went off about how he's a christian and christians wouldn't treat each other like we were allegedly ganging up on him.  It's a good thread, even features CC97 demolishing the guy.

Also came across the old "poo" thread, which I re-read and still cracks me up.  The Hemingway-titles-as-poo-references is gold.

For anyone else so inclined, remember that "Today, we are all Cardinals" was never said by the person accused of saying it, just like how Edward G. Robinson never really says "who's your Moses now, n'yah, n'yah" in The Ten Commandments

You have to wonder if Bettman has some three-dimensional chess game going in his head that there'll be an influx of talent from all the players wanting to flee the KHL.

Seattle should've joined in the early 90's, but Sonics owner Barry Ackerley walked out on the other investors, on purpose mind you, so the Seattle bid would fail. Dick.

He also intentionally renovated Key Arena so it held only 11,000 of the worst-placed seats possible for hockey, as a means of keeping out any would-be "competition." It was passable for the Thunderbirds and that was about the limit, which is why the Seattle Supersonics continue thriving in the Emerald City to this very day.

What is the end goal for number of teams? I thought we'd all be good once each league ended up at 32. The math an symmetry makes too much sense.

This is a league that was happy at 21 teams for a substantial run. I'm not sure if that factors into it much.

That said, in theory, 36 isn't that much more of a burden, when compared to 32. The NHL is a more gate-driven league than the others, and the past two expansions have been almost exclusively positive experiences for the existing owners.

I think they'll keep expanding until they are given what they see as a reason not to.

Thunder Bay Lynx - International Hockey Association (2 seasons, 2017-18, 2019-20, 2018 Xtreme Cup Champions)Houston Armadillos - Major League Hockey (2 seasons, 2016-18) | Minnesota Muskies - North American Basketball Association (1 season, 2017-2018) | Louisville Thoroughbreds - United League of Baseball (1 season, 2017, 2017 United Cup Champions) | Las Vegas Thunderbirds - International Basketball League (1 season, 2016-17, 2017 Champions)

oh I'm 99.9% sure the guy "BigMac12" never said that himself, but it was a reference to all the jesus stuff he brought into the thread.  In fact, you may have been the inventor.  Surprised I couldn't find it.

Wasn't there a guy trying to bring the NHL to Hamilton a long time ago, only for the NHL to stop him?

Yes, in fact they even made a movie about him last year. Vine star-turned-voice actor ProZD is in it for a bit. The Hamilton NHL mess even factors into the film a little, and one of the guys from This Hour Has 22 Minutes plays Gary Bettman!

I think Utah will be a pretty good hockey market, I’m just shocked they were the ones to get it done after so long. I really hate it for the the Coyotes fans… but it was time. It had been time for a while. Maybe they get a second chance down the road and make use of it, or not and they just become Atlanta 2.

Sucks, but it also doesn’t. Yknow?

It comes off to me like Gary Bettman didn't want the team to leave the area, so the goal was to move them to the closest city nearby that had a suitable arena, regardless of whether there was a demand for hockey or not.

Quebec was off the table, no matter how many tens of thousands of fans showed up to support their minor league team. But I was initially surprised Houston was not the chosen destination.

Especially with Dallas in the same division.

"Today, we are all Cardinals" was from a news article that the "accused" linked to in the original thread.

Yeah, but he also posted that at one point, too. I remember that one rather vividly. It was after Josh Hancock drunk texted himself into the back of a parked tow truck, which makes the whole thing even funnier.

The line was "I am a Cardinal.", which is arguably funnier than the meme.  We were all like 19 years old and stupid.

HOWEVER, the Josh Hancock drunk-driving death was only 2.5 years before the Coyotes declared bankruptcy, which was almost 15 years ago. Time, man!

I think Phoenix would have had to have been an expansion for it to work. Acknowledge that there's not an NHL arena and build one. Take time to assemble a decent hockey-ops staff and business staff (whatever they inherited from the Jets was not it) and most of all, an owner who knows exactly what he's getting into. Not Minnesota guys who got derped by the worthless goddamn Timberwolves, not real estate speculators trying to get rich off a strip mall, not Wayne Gretzky, and not the parade of dopes who came in after the league. It needed to be a conscientious, from-the-ground-up project, but it wasn't, so it failed.

I think their ceiling if they'd built an arena on the east side of downtown would be Dallas' floor. It wouldn't have been a smashing success, but they'd still be around. The Westgate Entertainment District was like intentionally walking into quicksand and they've only lasted this long because the league dragged them along. But I believe if you took any hockey market in the league and plopped the team on the other side of the city away from the bulk of the money then they would also struggle. It was suicide doing it with a team with no roots established in the city.

There's been so many bad moves with them it makes the Blue Jackets look like the Lightning. Remember when they hired a math-whiz middle schooler to be GM who thought he could moneyball the Coyotes to success and then threw a diaper tantrum and quit? Probably best known now as the guy with the hot sister.

Over the last few years, some people here in the CCSLC have accused Major League Soccer of adding teams mainly to prop itself up financially through expansion fees.

Is it possible, then, that the NHL and its teams — even with a very different relationship from what MLS has with its clubs — have run into a troublesome monetary situation that is causing a compulsion, or at least a temptation, to get quick and easy funds by expanding to a shockingly gargantuan number of franchises?

Speaking of expansion and expansion fees, the Houston market is so much bigger than the Salt Lake City market that I wonder if the NHL is preferring to save Houston for an expansion team and thus enable each of its existing franchises to gain a cut of a hefty expansion fee payment from Tilman Fertitta.

Another possible reason for SLC beating out Houston in the Coyotes "sweepstakes" is that Ryan Smith might have a chummier relationship with the NHL brass in general and with Gary Bettman in particular than does Fertitta.

The most amazing part of the John Chayka saga was that he was like "whatever you do, don't draft Mitch Miller, he stuffed urinal cakes in a disabled kid's mouth," then quit the team, then the team was so mad at him that they drafted Mitch Miller out of spite and everyone got really mad at them.

First off, MLS is totally doing that, and secondly, I don't think it's just them and it's certainly not just sports. A lot of our nation's Big Business Thinkers are getting doompilled by nonsense inside their bubbles and think the end is nigh, so they're in Get Mine Now Mode even more than they have been previously, and this is not a group renowned for their ability to look past their own noses to next quarter. Claw it all in from the suckers now, because any day now that AI which can't reliably tell you what two plus five divided by four is will become Skynet somehow and they'll have to be at the ready with their bunkers in New Zealand and/or on Mars, where they can eventually get down to the important business of repopulating humanity in their own images.

If only teams had that energy towards convicted sex pest Billy Tibbetts back in the day.
