I have no excitement for Utah either and I think we're all kind of blindsided by that being the location that ultimately landed the Coyotes after the dozen other markets that got close in the last decade. It reminds me of Jacksonville getting the Jags because the NFL needed to expand by two teams, but the bids in better markets all tripped over their own butts so the Jacksonville bid was picked by default.

I was just correcting our guy up there who said that people were hypocritically celebrating the Utah Hockey Pucks using public funds to build an arena when A. nobody is doing that because B. that would require that anyone be fired up for Utah at all.

A thing I think is interesting is most people's response has been "ahh yeah well probably for the best" Very few people defending Phoenix.

At least now we get to stop following their endless relocation saga. It's a bit of a relief.

Yet I keep getting into it with the small population who feel the opposite, on TwiX (although most of them seem to be from elsewhere who are just positing themselves as the saviors sticking up for those who are suffering from the loss of their team... and failing to use logic to do so).

Not on this board, no, but the ass-grabbers on reddit are all holding each other and weeping about how Phoenix is really a great market that was done wrong by a horrible league that just gave up too soon. I get annoyed but then it's possible some of them are 14 years old and literally were not alive when Jerry Moyes first :censored:ed off.

Are there any Coyotes in Utah?

Still, Utah Coyotes and Salt Lake City Coyotes doesn't sound good. Relocation was inevitable. But getting their own identity would be better.

Even their basketball team took New Orleans' identity. Both of their big 4 pro sports teams have a brand that used to belong to someone else.

Did we talk about what ever happened to George Gosbee, the person who first bought the Coyotes out of league ownership?

https://calgaryherald.com/news/local-news/corbella-gosbee

Quote

The death sent shockwaves through the Calgary and Canadian business community. How could a celebrated businessman, who seemingly had everything, take his own life?

George had attempted to kill himself many times before, according to the book. When he finally did, Karen describes it later as “a relief.” This shocking revelation — something most people would never admit to even if they thought it — is an indication of just how raw and honest this book is. It’s clear the rose-coloured glasses and the spray-on tans designed to try to keep George happy are no longer something Karen Gosbee is willing to accept.

Karen, now 50, may have allowed her husband to abuse her, call her vulgar names, push her, punch her in the face, choke her and engage in numerous affairs throughout their 23-year marriage, but she has definitely found her voice — and it’s a strong one — in the pages of this tell-all book that is as disturbing as it is informative and potentially useful for others who have family members struggling with addictions and mental health challenges. Helping others who live with loved ones struggling with mental health and addictions issues is, she says, the purpose of her book and is where she has been focusing her attention since her husband’s death.

. . .

George was given a Rolex by his parents when he graduated from university and he grew obsessed with luxury watches, buying himself many.

“George knew that he had only scratched the surface of the luxury watch world. He told me that, when he had more money, he would buy himself more expensive watches and a Bentley. In the meantime, he saw himself as sacrificing his material ambitions to provide for the family by ‘making do’ with fakes.

George was introduced to the world of fake luxury watches on a trip to China in 2010, and went crazy buying replicas of all the brands he could not afford. Unfortunately, he was called out on one of his shooting trips for having a fake Patek Philippe 5270P Chronograph (the real thing retails for $192,780). An oil executive explained that the mechanics of George’s watch were not real, that the date should show the month as well as the day, and that the face size was a little larger than normal. George was embarrassed and somehow, when he came home, it became my fault. It didn’t stop him from buying the fakes, however. He refreshed his large counterfeit collection on later trips to China, although he only did so with mid-luxury watches: not the high-end variety, where the differences were easier to spot.”

I'm sorry I asked. The domestic abuse is appalling, but "my undoing was my addiction to counterfeit luxury watches" is platonic-ideal OITGDNHL.

I think you’ll find the vast majority are that. Being on the major social media apps for sports discourse is a mistake, especially in hockey circles.

Stick to the forums and you’ll be in better shape. Most of the time anyway, as I’m sure BigMac12 was a child when he was talking about frozen blood, non-believers, and parking lots.

I heard on PHNX that Ryan Smith plans on rebranding the team once his purchase of the team is finalized.

Wait, does this mean they’re moving immediately now, or still in the off season?

EDIT: N/M. I forgot how close to the end of the season we already are.

Had to come in for one last time at the end of it all.

Never forget this team was all but sold to Winnipeg and out the door in Spring 2011, but then Glendale went insane and gave one of the most generous subsidy deals in the history of major pro sports….

and the team still hemorrhaged money to the point where the new ownership group had to get out in a couple of years.

Yes, the range of coyotes is across the entire US, 90% of Mexico, and like 2/3 of Canada. There's almost nowhere in North America where the Coyotes name wouldn't make sense.

That being said, I agree they should probably change the name.

Only real downside in all this will be losing the Kachina logo, though it would absolutely be in character for a Utah team to just keep it even though it's irrelevant to the area.

The Delta Center looks atrocious for hockey, but at least it'll be temporary.

Was horrible for the few AFL games I went to there. There better be an arena plan already sealed before this move got approved.

TwiX is the same thing. And most of them aren't even from the Phoenix area. They just go around looking for any opportunity to be the advocate for fanbases being "taking advantage of by greedy owners".  They won't even do the most basic of research to see that it was this owner and the league itself that were the ones trying to keep them there and it was the locals who didn't care about them leaving.

It was a hell of a ride, I am sad to see them go only because I did like the Coyotes. But let’s be real. With no real home they were destined to leave. But again if it wasn’t for the random commercial on the radio would you even know they existed here in Phoenix? Plus from what I hear, that if or when the NHL comes back into Phoenix it’s going to be a strong investor with a strong arena or prospect of an arena and want nothing to do with Murrello. John Gambodoro here in Phoenix has been doing a bang up job reporting and keeping up on this and yes I feel bad for the fans and the situation. It’s time to move on and let the Coyotes/Grizzlies/Eagles flourish in another city.

My guess is they'll be the Coyotezz for a season while working out a permanent identity.  Like the Tennessee Oilers before becoming the Titans.  If Fanatics can't even get MLB uniforms to clubs in time, there's like zero % chance they'd be able to produce and distribute new Utah NHL jerseys in time, considering NHL is probably at the bottom of their food chain.  Even if they went totally generic for a season - like those Jazz two-tone-blue unis.

Cities that tried to get the Coyotes but failed:

- Kansas City
- Hamilton

- Winnipeg

- Seattle

- Quebec City

- Houston

- Likely more that I’m forgetting/we don’t know about

The city that finally got them:

- Salt Lake City

I think Utah will be a pretty good hockey market, I’m just shocked they were the ones to get it done after so long. I really hate it for the the Coyotes fans… but it was time. It had been time for a while. Maybe they get a second chance down the road and make use of it, or not and they just become Atlanta 2.

Sucks, but it also doesn’t. Yknow?

Salt Lake City seems like a weird landing pad for the NHL. It's a pretty small market (smaller than Calgary and Edmonton from a population standpoint, although I'm sure their GDP is a fair bit higher), and it already has a significant competitor in the form of an established NBA team. Usually the NHL only goes for smaller markets when it's clearly the biggest game in town (Columbus, Raleigh, most Canadian cities).

Maybe they'll be able to make it work, but it seems odd to me that they'd choose a small, relatively crowded market as opposed to a huge city like Houston. Even a place like San Diego is significantly bigger and without direct competition (the NBA and NHL teams up the road in LA/OC don't really count).
