I was gonna wait for the WCOH to be completed but I'm impatient. Buckle up because it's happening again.

When I did the 1972 Project, I hadn't intended to go back and do anything like it again. I hand drew 131 football uniforms for 130 FBS teams (and a stray FCS team) and I wasn't even completely done with the drawing phase when I started posting teams in March 2018. Flash forward almost 3 years later and I had wrapped on the project. 130+1 teams, four sports, and a website allowing you to see football uniform combos. It was great. It was a massive accomplishment.

And just 219 days later, the cycle was starting over again. But that was good. I couldn't control realignment and teams moving up. I missed on 4 teams that are moving up so now they get their chance.

Rules are the same, but for those that are new to the arena: Nike is control of college sports aesthetics, much to probably some dismay from some corners of the world. In addition, every team in this universe also has a varsity level football, hockey, baseball and basketball teams. At the FCS level, this really means forming or potentially reviving unique looks for everyone and especially putting some catalog looks to pasture.  Also something that is a little more unique to the FCS level that we didn't really have to worry about with the FBS teams: football teams will be given their football conference patches, but other sports teams in non-football conferences will be given those conference patches, i.e. NDSU playing football in the Missouri Valley but other sports playing in The Summit League. Plus in the downtime there were some improvements made to the templates, ways to see more options for socks and cleats at once and those sort of things.

Anyways, let's pick up where we left off shall we?

The Vandals were the last team in the original list of teams and they were there only because they were an FBS team when the light bulb first went off. And if you remember, they were still wearing old gold at that point. Well 4 years is a long time in the life span of a uniform or branding set. Now the Vandals have gone back to their vibrant Pride Gold. They also have slowly rolled out new uniforms based on the recent updates and haven't quite gotten them all out yet but I had some changes I wanted to make.

Football - So football returns to their iconic look, black with athletic gold. Their new away uniforms utilize the Steelers stripe which has some historical precedence for the Vandals but I wasn't intent on making them complete Steelers clones. For the black uniforms, the stripes simply flip the black and white. Also a big addition to all the uniforms is a number font that gets close to the wordmarks but isn't an exact match. For the helmet options, a couple different gold, Vandals arch and the I block logo. Black helmet also sees the I block. I had pointed out in the FBS thread that Idaho suffers from a "Colorado Complex", having their official school colors be silver and gold, which don't always mesh well. But with the new gold, I felt that it could work this time, and the silver alternates swap out the Steelers stripe for a triple stripe, based on the Ken Hobart era uniforms. The alternate uniform would be initially paired with the black helmet with the Joe Vandal mascot logo on the sides. (Also those black helmets represent two different helmets. There would also be an option for white pants, they're just not pictured.)

Hockey - I have said enough negative things about this hockey club so I'll spare you all that diatribe again. The Vandals hockey team mixes black, silver and gold and they do it pretty well but I wanted to get away from that and save silver for the alternate. So with that, the Steelers stripes come over to the sleeves. I retired their college wordmark + number treatment and replaced it with the I-Block logo. I did briefly consider a gold helmet for hockey, but I wasn't a fan in the end, so just black helmets. The silver uniforms for the non-football sports work into a fauxback sort of vibe. The college wordmark treatment returns, just with Joe Vandal under it instead of a player number, and the triple stripe swaps in for the Steeler stripes.

Baseball - Boise State and Idaho both dropped their baseball programs in 1980 and they became club programs. Unfortunately for their varsity team's return, the club team doesn't offer too much to the aesthetic. 3 options for head gear: all black + I-Block, gold/black with the I+Block, and black/gold with Joe Vandal. Smaller stripes on the sleeves on V-neck uniforms. With the return to the classic gold color, it felt right for these uniforms. Alternate goes silver like the rest, stripes flip to the triple stripe. Black and gold sock options for the white and black uniforms, just black for the alternate.

Basketball - Where basketball uniforms can  be a little more expressive than other sports uniforms, that's not the case here. Simpler solid stripes around the neck and arm holes, main stripe down the sides of the jerseys. Contrasting waistbands, I-Block on the front, with the full stripe on the bottoms of the shorts, logo on the sides of the shorts. The alternate deviates ever so slightly from the others, using the wordmark from the 1981-82 team that won the Big Sky and lost just 3 games that season, but that's the only real deviation. The triple stripes make their way back and so does Joe Vandal.

Some of you may remember I had a website where you could pick and make your own combos. I don plan on keeping that going, but it is in need of some serious help so updates might be a little slower there. But let's have some fun with it! And besides, the second movie in the trilogy is usually a better one than the first 😉

Thanks to three generations of family connections, NDSU was the only other FCS team that got a redesign in the first go round, but it really wasn't a redesign at all, given that I just added a set of white pants to football and made some minor modifications here and there to the other sports. This time I really did try and go for something different, even if it wasn't fully a new idea.

Football - I'm sure there's a big contingent of people out there that are loving that NDSU isn't winning the championship every year right now, but now you have to deal with the other Dakota State team doing it. As for the uniforms, I liked the addition of stripes around 2015/2016 and getting away from the Wentz era panel look, but I wanted something that was a little more interwoven to the history of NDSU football and connecting back to the D2 championships as well. So, the triple stripe fades into the past and a newer stripe emerges. the D2 Bison wore uniforms that closely resembled the Lombardi Packers' uniforms so I tweaked the stripes a little to resemble those but not be direct clones. The helmet and pant stripes mirror each other. The Harvest Bowl helmets stick around, having proven to be a huge hit since they were introduced.

Hockey - Not the first Dakota school you think of when you mention hockey, but for a club program, they don't do too bad for themselves. The uniforms however, took a step backwards since the first go round. They're currently sporting black uniforms (with team colors at least) and grey and black uniforms. So that stops now, with the new stripe taking root on the sleeves and the hem. Went with the primary logo on the home and away uniforms as opposed to the charging bison. Since the other sports don't participate (at least to my understanding) in the Harvest Bowl, the alternates utilize the design from the green football helmet and use the wheat spike in the stripe on the sleeves and pairing down the stripe to a simpler northwestern style.

Baseball - Nothing wild for the baseball Bison. Simplified the stripe down to a northwestern on the sleeves with some placket piping. Alternate keeps up the Harvest style, with the wheat stripe taking up some real estate on the sleeves. Yellow/green and green/yellow form the headgear rotation, with a similar story for the socks. I did briefly consider making the alternate all green, but it felt like a lot.

Basketball - To the hardwood, we get away from the chevron catalog pattern to something that has a little bit of a retro feel. NW stripes around the arm/neck holes, full stripe down the sides of the jersey and shorts, finishing with the NW stripe at the bottom of the shorts. The alternates continue the Harvest look, and because I like to do weird things on basketball jerseys, the Charging Bison on the chest, number off center underneath it. (Logos can go on the chest of basketball jerseys and I'm sick of pretending they can't).

Holdovers are out of the way, we can get into some new faces!

Our first true new team. And one that has a super fun branding but just needs a chance to highlight it a little more.

Football - The Racers football team gets us going. Starting at the helmets, we get away from the UConn-style helmet stripe and revive the 2018 era stripe with the diamonds, with some tweaks. The original plan was to bring back the stripes with the checkerboard, but after comparing the two, I felt the diamonds were more unique and fun to look at, but I kept the checkerboard color scheme for some razzle dazzle. Navy and white helmets with the M-Racer on the sides. Jerseys carry the stripes over to the sleeves. Now I know Murray State had a proprietary font, but for the life of me I could not find any solid reference images to work with, so I went with something a little more custom but still fitting the vibes. Pants have a cut stripe that matches the rest.

Hockey - Something fun about this edition of the project is that there's a lot of these teams that don't even have a club team, so hockey becomes a blank canvas for a lot of these teams. But Murray keeps things pretty true to classic hockey aesthetics. The team stripe is the main feature on the jerseys and socks, with the M-Racers logo on the chest. Alternate shakes things up a little bit with stripes pretty similar to the Canucks' white jerseys on the sleeves with a little different look on the hem of the jersey. Alternate logo replaces the primary on the chest. Hockey doesn't get the stripes on the pants, as I felt like it was a little too much when it was all put together.

Baseball - Despite my aversion to pinstripes, I really liked the way the team looks in them. So I kept them around. M-Racers logos on the home and away navy jersey, number opposite. A much smaller version of the diamond stripes finds their home on the sleeves. Interrupted stripe on the two sets of pants - pinstripes and solid white. Alternate goes gold with a v-neck style, script Racers makes an appearance, with larger diamond stripes. Navy/gold hat with the primary logo and a tri-color with the alternate logo. Navy and gold socks round out the parts for options.

Basketball - Finishing us off here, one of Murray State's most famous alumni lends his influence, with Ja Morant's jersey style bringing back the cut underarm stripes, but this time with the diamond stripe. Murray State sandwich on the fronts of the home and away uniforms, Racers on the gold alternate. Shorts have the inverse of the stripe, with the alternate logo positioned above it.

C&C welcome!

Not too long ago, you might have confused UT Martin for a knock off Auburn, which wasn't too far off. So getting away from that comparison was important to me, but how was that going to take place? Well thanks to the basketball team and their candy cane warmup pants from the 2020/2021 ish seasons, we had all we need.

Football - Kicking us off (heh), is the football team and right away things are very different. Gone is the northwestern stripe from the helmet, replaced by an asymmetrical stripe on both a white and navy shell. Also gone is the UTM mark. It serves a purpose IMO but not as the helmet logo. Now the options are the straight on Skyhawk logo and the newer side profile Skyhawk. Down to the jerseys, with a multitude of orange/white/navy stripes, which don't change on the jerseys, so one color always drops to the jersey color. A new number font that tangentially matches the wordmarks is introduced. The pants have the repeating stripe from top to bottom down the sides.

Hockey - Another team without a hockey club. The bevy of stripes is repeated on the sleeves, with the simpler rendition on the hem. Primary logo on the chest, socks match their counterpart uniforms. The alternate takes things in the direction of the Ottawa 67's white jerseys. The stripes are bigger and run down the sleeves, hem stripe gets a little bigger. Pants have the stripes down the sides, white and navy helmets. (as a general reminder, unless I say otherwise, most equipment across the respective sports can be interchangeable).

Baseball - A refined take on the new style, baseball gets all the new bells and whistles. Headgear gets three options: all navy, navy/orange, tricolor. Full stripes on the sleeves and the home and away uniforms, with single color placket piping. The wordmarks gets straightened out and arched, numbers underneath. Alternate mirrors the hockey jersey with the stripes running down the sleeves with a script Skyhawks joining the look. Baseball pants are the only ones that don't get the repeating stripes down the side. I didn't like how it turned out so just the simple asymmetric stripe.

Basketball - The genesis of the new look keeps things fairly refined on the home and away uniforms. Solid colors around the neck and arm holes, with the repeating stripes down the sides. Solid color on the waistband, logo down on the leg. The alternate gets out there a little bit, with the stripes taking up most of the shoulder space on the jersey, as well as on the sides and back half of the shorts.

C&C welcome! For those of you that do care about the website, I have hit a slight snag with getting it updated as it is hard to upload images when you're out of free space to do so. So at present, I am working through alternatives but I do plan on continuing having the site serve its purpose.

As someone else who's done a Murray State concept, I applaud this.  Probably would've gone in another riding silk inspired direction in baseball, maybe poca dots, but a very fitting set overall.

There was a brief moment in time where in doing research for the Racers, I considered a different pattern for all four sports but canned that when I realized how painstaking that would be in real life to execute and keep separate for the sports. But I think the baseball pattern did scale down nicely after another look it.

Next up on our list are our gracious hosts of the First Four. Dayton has kept things pretty classic in style and so did I, but I did try and add a little bit of modernity to it at the same time.

GaZFuuE.png sMxeGUV.png

PJqqgHF.png fqjaUkK.png

Football - Like I mentioned in the very short preamble, Dayton has kept things pretty simple. My little addition to the look is using the wings from the primary logo as part of the stripe and overall look. So from the top down, Four helmet styles! 2 designs each,  red and white with the primary Dayton - D logo on the sides. the other, also red and white with the wings from the logo now forming wings on the sides of the helmets. Jerseys take the stripes from the shoulders and move them to the sleeves, with a cutout of the wings from the logo. Finally down to the pants, which have the same style of the stripe but no cut out wings. Finally, for the first time in possibly ever, a navy alternate for Dayton, which is nothing more than a recolor, but that's more than alright IMO.

Hockey - So the Flyers' club team for the better part of a few years has worn the Chapel Blue color pretty exclusively which works for them, but now everything comes under a new umbrella. So while Chapel Blue goes away as the full time blue, it won't be gone for long. Anyways, the same stripes from football make their way across to the ice onto a pretty classic styled hockey uniform. Dayton is our first team in this new series to have multiple options for hockey pants, a modest two in this case, which also applies to the helmets in which there are two options.

Baseball - Like most teams you'll encounter here, baseball is a refined and simpler version of the main look. This one is no exception, as the only real change to the design is the jersey has the simpler cut stripe opposed to the full cut-out stripe. Otherwise it's about what you'd expect to see. The biggest addition to the group, continues the larger trend of getting every team a navy alternate.

Basketball - Could be argued that Dayton's basketball team is the most famous of the four sports on the list, and for pretty good reason. Their uniforms keep it classic but bring that modernity I was hoping to achieve. the arm and neck stripes use the simpler cut stripe. Shorts use the cut-out stripe at an angle on the sides of the shorts.

And before we go:

hvqRvKk.png wlop2Wr.png

All four teams get a Chapel Blue alternate that DOES NOT MIX AND MATCH. Felt it better that way to avoid looking like Ole Miss. Anyways, I gave the Chapel Blue uniforms a vintage feel, something their basketball has been doing already. This also introduces the Rudy Flyer logos into the mix as a fun deviation from the norm. Design stays largely the same, with the lighter blue replacing navy throughout. There's also a new Flyers script that gets used on all four jerseys.

That wraps up Dayton. Love to hear what you guys think!

Football -  Definitely not the most exciting design to follow up with, but when you start with a football team that's played their rival 159 times since 1884, classic feels like an appropriate avenue. So Lehigh football has recently moved away from the shoulder stripes to a more catalog UA look, even using the white helmet more often and I'm rolling back the changes. Back to the UCLA shoulder stripes look and the gold helmet as the primary helmet option. The alternate look uses the 1977 D2 championship team a lot as influence, the white helmet is a modernized version of that team's helmet. The northwestern stripe also comes over from 1977, now on a gold base.

Hockey - The look for hockey is very similar to what their club team wears currently, just with a little more added gold on the stripes. A traditional collegiate lockup on the chest of the home and away tops. Alternate swaps out the logo under LEHIGH for a number and moves the hawk logo up to the shoulders. Brown pants for all uniforms, gold and brown helmets round out the looks.

Baseball -  No real deviations to be found here. Very traditional baseball uniforms for the Mountain Hawks (complete with opaque pants). triple stripe placket piping and sleeve stripes. Baseball pants are the only ones to get stripes down the sides of the legwear. Alternate keeps the fauxback feelings going, on a v-neck pullover with larger stripes. Brown/gold hats with the L-hawk on the front and a white/brown hat with an interlocking LU.

Basketball - Finishing us up are more classically styled uniforms, with the same stripes around the arms and neck, and on the waistband and legs of the shorts. Alternate moves the northwestern stripe to the sides of the uniform, with a simpler double stripe as a smaller, detail element.

C&C welcome!

Football - One thing that made this second run of the project a little more interesting was that a good portion of these schools have worn nothing but catalog options but for the schools that have played football for a long time, there aren't as many historical references to fall back on compared to some of the FBS schools, so it was a test of creativity to come up with some new, unique looks. For NCCU, the Celebration Bowl red tops were certainly a good point to potentially start with but I opted for something a little different. This might be the first (but won't be the last) time I used portions of a team's social media branding on a uniform but I combined a checkerboard pattern with baseball's racing stripe into a new look for the Eagles. I also promoted grey to full time alternate status across all the sports, relegating black to the logos. Also new to the style are a new font system and wordmarks, replacing the Dafont college type.

Hockey - A new sport for the Eagles that merges right into the fold. The same shoulder stripes can be found here, ending just before the cuff of the sleeves. Eagle head can be found on the chest of the home and away uniforms with the full body bird on the grey alternates. Pants have the full stripe, socks matching their respective hems with a solid color stripe.

Baseball - Like the inspiration image says, the MEAC and NCCU have both left baseball in the dust but that doesn't stop me here. Basically resurrected the last uniforms the team wore, swapped the black for grey on the sleeves on some of the uniforms. Red/grey and grey and red headgear options. New wordmarks on the chests of the three tops, checkerboards added to the ends of the sleeves. Pants have a simple stripe down the sides.

Basketball - Finishing us up here, basketball continues the new styles, with stripes that start up by the collars and run 3/4s of the way down the side, ending in the checkerboards. Arched versions of the wordmarks on the chests. Shorts have a single color stripe around the bottom of the leg holes, with the checkerboard stripe running up the sides similarly to the sides of the jersey with NC CENTRAL in the stripe.

C&C welcome!

For those that might still be interested, I am still mulling options over on the website and how to proceed, which I think is going to have to be an upgrade from a few Wix site to a paid option. Will probably happen soon but I'll make mention of when it happens.

Full transparency: I'd have had these ready sooner if I wasn't trying to find a bunch of Twitter/Elon Musk related puns to fit into this post.

Football - Pretty much a new direction from the current catalog look. Went away from the pointy E on the helmets to the Phoenix logo. The design on the jersey is derived from the logo, and received the name, "The Phoenix Stripe", which juts out from the sleeves to the chest, like the Falcons jerseys. Pants receive the stripe running down from the top of the pants to down about 3/4s of the way of the side.

Hockey -  The hockey club gets away from having a black uniform, getting back onto school colors full time. These might be the most chaotic of the uniforms, with the Phoenix stripe running from the collar down the sleeves. Went with the Phoenix logo with Elon attached to it. As is the case with other hockey teams, pants don't receive the stripe down the sides.

Baseball - Baseball keeps the new stripe going, albeit a little smaller than their mates. Red headgear, the only sport that gets that distinction, along with a white option. Jerseys are fundamentally baseball, just with some pointy stripes on the sleeves. White and gold pants are the options for keeping your legs warm.

Basketball - I wasn't totally sure about these, I went with the Phoenix stripe around the arms and neck, with some interruption on the back, courtesy of the Nike template. ELON over the number on the fronts of the home and away with the Phoenix logo over the number on the gold jersey. Shorts have the stripe around the bottom of the legs that flares up in the back.

C&C welcome and appreciated!

Shane Gillis would look great sitting on the bench in one of these. Nice job!

Next up on our list are our gracious hosts of the First Four. Dayton has kept things pretty classic in style and so did I, but I did try and add a little bit of modernity to it at the same time.

All four teams get a Chapel Blue alternate that DOES NOT MIX AND MATCH. Felt it better that way to avoid looking like Ole Miss. Anyways, I gave the Chapel Blue uniforms a vintage feel, something their basketball has been doing already. This also introduces the Rudy Flyer logos into the mix as a fun deviation from the norm. Design stays largely the same, with the lighter blue replacing navy throughout. There's also a new Flyers script that gets used on all four jerseys.

That wraps up Dayton. Love to hear what you guys think!

I love all the hockey jerseys! especially the chapel blue.

I think the alt would go good with the idaho script or the ido curved without joe vandal. im probably just gonna give my thoughts about hockey jerseys

Football - When I started the planning for this, Valpo had announced in February of '21 that they were moving away from the Crusaders nickname (ironically the same thing my second university underwent in 2017). So when I got around to Valparaiso, they were nicknameless and if I had just waited a few more weeks, I would have known they'd be called the Beacons moving forward. But the new nickname worked very well within the new style I had picked out for them. The Beacons are the first football team that really gets the whole works, with three options each from helmet to cleats. While the "Shield of Character" logo works well, I went with a modified version of their lighthouse logo with a block V as the new primary, relegating the shield to secondary status. The main design feature is the "Beacon Stripe" which stays consistent across the three colors, which does result with some interesting results on the brown pieces. The stripe is also found forming a V on most uses. Pants combine the stripe with a simple wordmark.

Hockey - I was a bit surprised to see that Valpo doesn't have as much as a club hockey team, but that just meant a blank canvas to work off of. The same angled Beacon stripe can be found on the sleeves and on the hem line. V logo on the chest of the home and away. Socks match their respective jerseys. Alternate swaps out the angled hem stripe for a straight across and sees a college wordmark + number move the V to the shoulders. A common occurrence in the early hockey teams, but the pants don't get the stripes as I felt it was a little much for the pants when combined with the rest of the design.

Baseball - In most cases I try and reign baseball in when it comes to matching the other sports' designs. This wasn't really a case of that. I let the Beacon stripe still shine through on this one, with faux vest sleeves on the white and gold uniforms. Valpo script on the home and away jerseys, block Valpo on the alternate. Pants have a similar stripe to the football uniforms, just sans the wordmark. All-brown and gold/brown headgear with similar colored socks round out the look.

Basketball  - A common theme here, basketball giving me the most issues. The lack of sleeves on (traditional) basketball uniforms make it interesting for some designs to translate and this one was a perfect case of that. The Beacon stripe becomes a stripe down the side of the jersey, which results in the brown jersey looking a little bit more plain than the rest. But the shorts get the full outcome of the stripe with a bold stripe angled across the bottoms of the shorts. In an inverse of the baseball jerseys, block Valpo on the home and away and script Valpo on the alternate.

Wyoming isn't the only school that can make brown and gold look good. Let me know if you agree!
