I don't know that you have beef, but you could always threaten them and se what they do. They might give in, or they might call your bluff and you can consult an IP theft lawyer to see if you have rights in this case. Not sure how much money these people have to shake out of them but there has to be some intellectual rights getting stomped on here. Changing a logo by a certain percentage is a fallacy according to a lawyer we work with. Determining a percentage is quite subjective. The real damage comes into play when it is obvious that a protected design is so obviously being stolen.I think they are "borrowing" an awful lot from your previous design. The fact that this guy had some relationship with both teams, and both team logos are so simliar in concept, I think means you may have a legit gripe.If you think they have some rather deep pockets to pick you may ask a copyright / trademark lawyer to look into it a bit...if only for a small fee. Maybe they will tell you it isn't worth it but you'd be surprised what a stern letter on legal letterhead can do! We had a similar incident here and we got the offenders to cease and desist rather quickly!If nothing else I would take solice in knowing your design kicks the butt out of the other design! HA!
